SONG QUILTS: WOMEN’S VOICES IN STITCH AND SONG
I would love the opportunity to share my work in progress at the Barents Bird Festival. The “Song Quilts” project visually interprets folk music from four distinct regions of Russia and the United States: Appalachian Mountain Music, Cowboy Music of the Western Plains, Moscow Music, and Music of the Russian Arctic. Each quilt is stitched using field recordings of women singing traditional music. I’ve developed a notation method that transforms pitch and rhythm into color and shape. The Song Quilts will celebrate the contributions of “women’s work” to national identity, and document and foster dialogue about the shared traditions that unite people divided by geography and politics.
In my presentation at the Barents Bird Festival I will talk about quilting and folk music traditions of the US, share field recordings and photographs from the women I’ve interviewed so far, perform a collection of traditional folk songs, and show photographs of the Song Quilts.
Across human history textiles were the first currency, they were used to create pictographic stories (long before written language was developed), denote social status, and identify tribes. This “women's work” is at the core of the development of civilizations. The folksy picture of a pacified woman dutifully stitching, ignores the true power of her work. Music has always been at the center of the human experience; a way to preserve history, uplift the spirit, join people together. The folk song traditions of the US and Russia are a shared piece of our human heritage and one that continues to speak to our history, uplifting our spirits, and bringing people together. The Song Quilts project will challenge audiences to revisit their own conceptions of fine art and folk art, the visual arts and music, and the people who create transcribing folk songs into quilts, I am tapping into that historic use of women's work as a powerful medium of communication.
To “translate” the field recordings I have collected into a visual medium I have developed my own notation method in which rhythm is represented by shape, and pitch is represented by color. The tonal relationships are inspired by a long tradition of color music, used by composers including Scriabin, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Messiaen. Each song resonates in my ears with a “home” color, and the pitch relationships determine how the rest of the quilt design lays out.
During my presentation, I’ll be performing and sharing traditional music of the Appalachian Mountains and Western Plains. While I am in Murmansk, I would love to meet with textile artists and musicians who would be interested in sharing their traditions with me. I would love to be able to make some recordings of women singing regional folk songs. I’ll then take those recordings of songs and transform them into quilts to finish the Song Quilts projects. I’ll also be able share songs and pictures from the Russian Arctic with a community of artists here in the US. Eventually I’ll have a large exhibition that shows the entire Song Quilts collection with a live performances of the music.
My goal with this project is to use folk art and folk music to challenge our understanding of national and cultural identity, to celebrate the contributions of women to our human heritage, and to share the diverse traditions of regions of the US and Russia. Art plays a powerful role in our human search for meaning, identity, and lifting our voices in shared song we can build a more peaceful world in which we celebrate the rich histories of unique cultural traditions and the people who participate in them

Я разработала систему, “переводящую” высоту звука и музыкальный ритм в цвет и форму. “Одеяла из песен” чествуют вклад “женской работы” в портрет нации и напоминают о важности общих традиций, объединяющих людей вопреки расстоянию и политике.
В моем выступлении на фестивале Птица Баренц я расскажу о традиционной вышивке и музыке США, поделюсь аудиозаписями и фотографиями женщин, у которых взяла интервью, исполню ряд народных композиций и покажу фотографии одеял из песен.
Ткани были первой валютой. Они служили для создания пиктографических повествований задолго до появления письменной речи, а также для обозначения социального статуса и принадлежности к племени. Такая "женская работа" с текстилем лежит в основе развития цивилизаций. Традиционный сюжет, изображающий умиротворенную девушку, с чувством долга шьющую одеяло, не отражает ценность ее труда. Музыка всегда была одним из центральных элементов человеческого восприятия. Это способ сохранить историю, поднять человеческий дух, объединить людей. Традиции народной музыки США и России - лоскут общего наследия, отражающий нашу историю, дарящий нам радость и единство. Проект “Одеяла из песен” призван сподвигнуть зрителей пересмотреть свое представление как о людях искусства, так и о самом искусстве: изящном и народном, визуальном и музыкальном. Превращая народную музыку в лоскутные одеяла, я изучаю роль этого исторически женского труда как важного средства коммуникации.
Чтобы визуализировать собранные мной аудиозаписи, я разработала концепцию, в рамках которой ритм представлен формой, а высота звучания - цветом. Вдохновением для превращения высоты в цвет служили классические примеры цветомузыки Скрябина, Римского-Корсакова и Мессиана. Мое восприятие песен помогает в выборе основного тона, а затем лишь соотношение «высота - цвет» определяет, как будет выглядеть одеяло.
Во время презентации, я исполню традиционную музыку гор Аппалачи и западных равнин. В Мурманске я бы хотела встретиться с художниками, работающими с тканями, и с музыкантами, которые готовы поделиться со мной местными музыкальными традициями. Я была бы рада записать народные песни региона, исполненные женщинами. Тогда, на основе полученных записей, я сошью лоскутные одеяла, чтобы завершить свой проект. К тому же, это предоставит мне возможность поделиться искусством русской Арктики с членами художественного сообщества США. В итоге я организую крупномасштабную выставку, где представлю все лоскутные одеяла под аккомпанемент живой музыки.
Целью своей работы я вижу переосмысление нашей национальной и культурной идентичности, чествование вклада женщин в человеческое наследие. С помощью народного искусства и музыки я хочу поделиться традициями регионов России и США. Искусство играет важнейшую роль в присущем человеку поиске себя, смысла и справедливости. Влившись в хор голосов, мы способны взлелеять мирное единство планеты, на которой все бы ценили людей искусства и богатую историю культурных традиций.
