The Irish call their island the Emerald isle because it is so green. Other people say it is so green because it rains a lot. You can't please everyone all the time. Over a thousand years ago Ireland was made up of four kingdoms. Ulster, Leinster, Munster and Connaught. Most of Ulster, the old kingdom of the north, is still separate from the rest of Ireland.
Dublin, Ireland's capital, is like any other large city. Fast-moving, active and noisy. But when you leave the capital, you enter into a land, where time is much slower. Ireland is a wonderful place for a holiday and a rest. People have time to stop and talk. And the Irish are famous for being talkers.
In the south of Ireland near Cork you will find the Blarney Stone. Anyone who kisses this stone receives the gift of telling a good story, even though it might not be a true one. Many people in Ireland are said to have kissed the Blarney Stone!
In the mountains and lakes of Ireland you can enjoy walking and fishing. No one will disturb you. In the West of Ireland, in Kerry and Galway you face the Atlantic in all its force and beauty.
The Irish are known for their hospitality and you will find friendly people to talk to when you go down the country roads.
Two Irish drinks are famous throughout the world: Guinness and Irish whiskey. In Ireland you will hear some wonderful music. Some of it can be sentimental, but it can also be very beautiful and romantic. This is a song called "Molly Malone". The Irish say there is something wonderful and romantic about their Emerald Isle on the edge of the great Atlantic. But that might just be a gift of the Blarney Stone.
