The role of the tip orbital structure in high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) imaging was theoretically studied since the invention of STM [1-3]. Recently, it has been demonstrated that high quality single crystalline probes with well-defined apex orientation can be used to control the contribution of certain tip orbitals in STM experiments [4]. That was confirmed by direct STM visualization of d-orbitals of the W[001] tip atom using carbon atomic orbitals in distance-dependent STM experiments on a graphite (0001) surface. DFT calculations of both the fully relaxed and constrained W[001] tip – graphite(0001) systems revealed that the appearance and transformation of the sub-atomic features observed at small tip-sample distances are related to a substantial modification of the orbital structure of the front W[001] tip atom due to a strong tip-surface interaction.
In this report we present experimental data obtained with [111]-oriented single crystalline tungsten and diamond probes on graphite (0001) and graphene/SiC(001) surfaces. The comparison of experimental data obtained on the same surfaces using different tips shows that spatial resolution can be enhanced using [111]-oriented tungsten and diamond probes. In particular, the results of STM experiments with a heavily boron-doped, diamond probe on a graphite surface and density functional theory calculations of the tip and surface electronic structure demonstrate that high spatial resolution can be achieved with diamond tips at tip-sample distances of 3-5 Е when p orbitals of the tip provide their maximum contribution to the tunneling current. At these distances the surface atomic and electronic structure is not substantially modified by the tip-sample interaction that allows imaging true surface electronic structure with slightly non-equivalent б and в atoms of the graphite lattice [5]. STM experiments with W[111] tips on the nanostructured graphene synthesized on cubic-SiC(001) surface [6,7] demonstrate the possibility to reach picometer lateral resolution without tip orbital structure effects on a subatomic scale on very rough surfaces with complicated atomic structure. This allows direct experimental visualization of the random picoscale distortions of the carbon bond lengths in the graphene lattice.
