Fish farming for the future

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

By Aimswell, 14, Tobago

I’m Aimswell and I live on the island of Tobago in the West Indies. Like lots of people here, my father is a fisherman and he taught me to fish when I was about five. I love it and have even won some prizes in fishing competitions. Local people here fish for themselves and some of them even supply fish to the big hotels. Recently everyone has started to notice that there are no so many fish in the sea as there used to be and the fish that we are catching now are really small, still young. If everyone keeps catching all the fish when they are so young, we may soon run out.

I am involved in a programme at my school to find a way for people in Tobago to be able to continue eating fish without making the ones in the sea rare. My teacher, Mr Peters, started it a little while ago with help from a holiday company and UK charity that cares for places where people go on holiday. The project is teaching all the kids in my school about fishing sustainably. This means learning about ways that we can eat fish without running out in the future. We are farming a freshwater fish called tilapia which people can grow in their homes and gardens in tanks, instead of catching lots of fish out of the seas.

We look after the fish during our agricultural science lessons. It’s my favourite lesson because we get to go outside and work in our school vegetable garden and look after the fish. I am in charge of the fish at the moment. They will grow big enough to eat in about four months. We have two different types of tilapia and they will each taste different when we eat them at last. They are really easy to look after as all they need to eat is water plants which we grow here too. Mr Peters hopes that when all the kids at my school go home and show their parents how we have grown fish at school, they can do the same at home. He hopes that one day everyone in Tobago will be able to do it.

I love working on the project because it is fun but also because it teaches us business skills and ways to help protect the environment.

1 Local fishermen avoid catching young fish.

2 The school programme aims to encourage more local people to eat fish.

3 The children are learning about a fish which lives in fresh water.

4 Aimswell sells the fish they produce at school.

5 The students are trying out different kinds of food for their fish.

6 Aimswell is keen on the school fish farm for several reasons.

7 _______________________________________

It’s possible to get your homework done even if you have a busy schedule – if you decide in advance what you have to do. On Sunday or Monday, jot down your activities for the upcoming week in a notebook and then include a time for homework for each day.

8________________________________________

Buy a folder for each of your classes. Divide it into three sections: notes, homework, and tests. Always put papers in the correct section.

9_______________________________________

Forget about doing your homework in front of the TV. Find a quiet place that’s well-lit, where you can concentrate without getting distracted.

10________________________________________

You won’t get any work done if you’re hungry. Your brain needs energy to work effectively! Drink plenty of water and snack on some fruit or cookies to get more  strength.

11 _______________________________________

Begin with your best subject. Your success will give you a feeling of satisfaction that will help you deal with your weaker subjects later.

12_______________________________________

If you’ve started your Science homework, finish it! Don’t leave one part of your homework unfinished to start another – you may not remember all those Chemistry formulas when you come back.

13_______________________________________

Take at least five-minute break when you feel tired. The rest will re-energise you so you’ll be able to finish your work.

14 ______________________________________

Homework is rarely an exciting thing to do. But it’s your top priority, and you have to get it done. Accepting this fact will help you deal with homework effectively

Dear Tina

I’ve never written to TeenTimeMag before, but after reading your article about the dating website I’ve just got to let you know how I feel. Usually, I’m quite easy-going girl. In fact, I’m a bit shy. But right now I’m really angry! Let me tell you why…

is an online club which only accepts beautiful people. To join you have to send in picture and a profile of what you’re like. Then, for three days members of this club study your profile, send in rude messages and then vote whether you attractive enough to become one of them. According to your article, more than 35,500 people have tried to join the club since January, but only one in twenty has been successful! It’s a cruel, arrogant system that makes good people feel frustrated, lonely and insecure. I’m not narrow-minded, but I was absolutely amazed you decided to print an article about this club, and I’m disappointed that you described it in such a positive way. I’ve always admired the sensible advice you give adolescent girls. You tell them not to try to look like skinny supermodels. You say it’s more important to have a lively personality and to be friendly and generous than it is to have perfect teeth or attractive body. But your article on sends out the opposite message that appearance is more important than personality.

Last weekend, I went to a new club with some friends. I was wearing a short denim skirt, sleeveless top and high heels and they let me go in. but they told my Debbie she couldn’t go in. why not? Maybe she wasn’t pretty enough or maybe it was because she was wearing some baggy jeans, a hooded sweatshirt and a pair of old trainers. Debbie’s a cheerful outgoing girl with a great sense of humour, but just then she felt miserable and depressed and she started crying. And that’s how the thousands of people who are rejected by   must feel.

Personally, I can’t stand people who look down on others just because of their appearance, so the next time write an article about such an unpleasant thing as   please try to describe it more accurately.
