This table represents an attempt to collect and compare terms and definitions of market surveillance used in national legislation, which is related to product safety, international and European documents and standards.
The term market surveillance is used mainly in EU legislation and is transposed in the national legislation of the EU Member States respectively. Terms state control /state inspection are mainly used in the legislation of CIS parison of definitions proves that in general these terms could not be considered as synonyms. The main difference is in the subject to control – market surveillance addresses products and state control /state inspection covers both products and economic operators (mainly producers). So differences in terms reflect to a certain extend differences in the approach to guaranty safe product on the market.
Definitions from ISO standard are given as a reference.
Source of some definitions is legislation available on Internet and others are taken from a document of Intergovernmental Council of CIS countries from 2005 and might be outdated. English/Russian texts are used were available. Any proposals, corrections and comments are highly appreciated.
