The current bachelor's thesis examines the ways of presenting pragmatic information in explanatory dictionaries. The thesis comprises 2 Sections and an extended Appendix with the set of practical tasks designed to enhance pragmatic awareness in the students of English and bibliography. Section 1 provides theoretical background for the research and contains an overview of the existing ways of presenting pragmatic information in electronic dictionaries. Section 2 concerns new options to introduce pragmatic information. Appendix contains a plan to a lesson or a seminar dedicated to the study of pragmatics and speech acts.
Topicality of the thesis is determined by the fact that pragmatics plays an important role in teaching and learning the English language as it helps to avoid cultural gaps and communication failures.
The aim of the paper is to analyze the structure and entries of a number of contemporary explanatory dictionaries in an attempt to reveal and compare the ways they present pragmatic information.
The methods of the research include contextual analysis, semantic analysis, discourse analysis.
The survey of contemporary explanatory online dictionaries has elicited the basic ways of introducing pragmatic information. The research proves that linguistic corpus resources and conversation analysis also have a great potential to improve pedagogical practice and that both approaches can be used in a number of ways, indirectly to inform teaching materials and reference works, or directly as language learning tools and repositories for the design of data-intensive teaching activities.
The given topic has a wide application in the foreign language teaching methodology. With the development of the electronic explanatory dictionaries we can expect significant progress in this field of linguistics and new options of introducing pragmatics, since new technologies give unlimited space for scientific work.
