There are two addresses in London that the whole world knows. One is Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives. The other is Buckingham Palace. This famous palace, first built in 1703, is in the very center of London.
It is two places, not one. It is a family house, where children play and grow up. It is also the place, where presidents, kings, and politicians go to meet the Queen.
Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema, and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and three miles of red carpet. Two men work full-time to look after the 300 clocks. About 700 people work in the palace.
When the Queen gets up in the morning, seven people look after her. One starts her bath, one prepares her clothes, and one feeds the Royal dogs. She has eight or nine dogs, and they sleep in their own bedroom near the Queens bedroom. Two people bring her breakfast. She has coffee from Harrods, toast, and eggs. Every day for fifteen minutes, a piper plays Scottish music outside her room and the Queen reads The Times.
Every Tuesday evening, she meets the Prime Minister. They talk about world news and have a drink, perhaps a gin and tonic or a whisky.
When the Queen invites a lot of people for dinner, it takes three days to prepare the table and three days to do the washing-up. Everybody has five glasses: one for red wine, one for white wine, one for port, and one for liqueur. During the first and second courses, the Queen speaks to the person on her left and then she speaks to the person on her right for the rest of the meal. When the Queen finishes her food, everybody finishes, and it is time for the next course!

Speaker 1.
It rained heavily all morning. The rain stopped at about two o, сlock and I went out for a walk. There was a cold wind blowing, so I put on my heaviest and warmest coat. As I was walking along the High Street the wind blew my hat off. I ran after it. The wind carried it into the road and I ran out to get it. I have just listened to the 9 o, clock news. It will freeze hard in most parts of the country, they say.
Speaker 2.
We are having spring weather now. The sun shone for several hours during the early part of the day. Now the sky is cloudy and it looks like rain. The rain will help things grow. The gardens are full of spring flowers and all the people in the village are busy sowing seeds. The man next door has been busy cutting the grass in the garden. I will have to start cutting the grass in my garden soon. It is hard work, but it has to be done.
Speaker 3.
I think June is one of the best months in the year. The temperature was almost twenty five this afternoon. The children enjoy the warm weather. I saw some of them in the river after school. Most of them were good swimmers. One small girl was learning. Her elder sister was teaching her. I used to swim in this river when I was a boy. Now I find the water too cold even on a day like this. I can”t remember when I last went swimming.
Speaker 4.
It, s beginning to get quite cold. We are glad to have fires and have been burning wood for the last two weeks. Those old trees that were cut down last winter will give us wood for the fires most of this winter. Our neighbours have electric fires. They don, t like fires that burn wood or coal: too much smoke and dirt, they say. I like to see a wood fire in the living room and I like an electric fire in the bed room.
Speaker 5.
It has been snowing for three days and nights now. In places the snow is already three feet deep. The postman was an hour late this morning. The trains are all late, and there are very few cars and vans on the road. If it freezes the roads will be very dangerous. There is nothing worse than frozen snow. The birds don, t like this sort of weather. They can, t find food. We, ve put out a lot of bread for them.
Speaker 6.
In February in my country it can be very cold, with lots of snow everywhere, so you must bring lots of warm clothes, coats and wooly hats, and, if you can, snow boots. Many people go skiing in the mountains at the weekends and when you are so high and the sky is blue, the sun can feel really quite hot - warm enough to have lunch outside. You can even sunbathe, so you should bring sun cream.
