Task V

1. Read and translate the texts.

A

Magazines, with their fashion articles, glossy photos and adverts, pressurize us into buying fashionable clothes. As a result, a lot of people try too hard to be 'in'. It's important to keep a sense of balance. You're young - all clothes look good on you. Make your own fashion. Don't be too quick to follow the crowd. Also, you can be fashionable without spending too much money. Shop around for bargains. It's not too hard to find pretty things in the sales. If you know any second-hand shops, you might find some great bargains there, too. Remember: fashion is supposed to be fun, so don't take it too seriously!

B

My friends and I love the fashionable clothes in magazines. We live in one of the world's great fashion capitals, Milan, so we are also surrounded by very stylish people. We would love to have enough money to look smart, but we are students and we aren't rich enough to buy lots of new outfits and designer clothes. We prefer casual clothes to formal clothes, but on the other hand, we don't want to look scruffy.

2. Do you have a similar problem?

Task VI. Discuss the statements.

a. People buy too many things nowadays. When they find themselves in a shop, they often buy not only the things they wanted to buy, but lots of unnecessary things, which they don't need at all.

b. It is not wise to go shopping and to buy things alone.

c. To buy practical things at reasonable price is not an easy matter.

Task VII. Ask and answer the questions in pairs.

a. Do you like shopping? Why / Why not?

b. What kinds of shops do you like? Why?

c. What kinds of shops don't you like? Why?
