Unit Statement:  In this unit, the student will learn about the lexical meaning of a word, differentiate between the direct and figurative value of words, and identify mono - and poly - semantic words.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

The Student Will define what the term ‘lexical meaning’ implies.
TSW differentiate between the direct and figurative meanings.
TSW recognize mono - and polysemantic word.
TSW explain the relation within the group of homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms.

The Student Will use different types of dictionaries to check the spelling, pronunciation, and meaning of a word.
TSW create sentences with homonyms, synonyms, antonyms.
TSW focus on grammatical meaning of a word (word as a part of speech; stem; ending functions).
TSW identify the communicative functions of a word, a phrase, a sentence.
TSW punctuate of simple sentences.
TSW write the dictations and summaries.

To receive a ‘B’, the student must show ‘B’ level mastery on ALL Essential Outcomes (TSWs). To receive an ‘A’, the student must show ‘A’ level mastery in 2 out of 3 available ‘A’ level TSWs and ‘B’ level mastery on all of the remaining TSWs.

3	TSW recognize mono - and poly-semantic words.	I can identify whether the word has one or more meanings and find examples in the text.	I can define which words are mono - and which ones are poly – semantic, but make some errors when providing examples.
4	TSW explain the relation within the group of homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms.	I have an excellent understanding of all three groups and demonstrate appropriate word choice in my writing.	I have a good understanding of these three groups, but my word choice can still be improved.
