Teacher: Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you and hope that you are in a good mood and our cooperation will be successful today. At our lessons we spoke about different ways of getting information. Some of them are slow, others are quick. Let’s think which of them is the most important, effective, the quickest, up-to-date and can give you a chance (an opportunity) to receive any information, watch films, download music at any time you want. How do you think which source of mass media gives us such possibilities?

St. 1: To my mind it is the Internet.

St. 2: It’s true that the Internet is a very important thing.

T.: You are right. The topic (theme) of our lesson is “The Internet and its role in Our Life”. We are going to read, speak, listen to some information and write an essay about the Internet and its role in Our Life. How do you think: what are the aims of our lesson?

S. 1: As far as I see we’ll develop our skills in reading and listening.

S. 2: No doubt we’ll learn to speak and sum up the influence of the Internet on our life.

II.

T.: You are quite right. I want you to work with the expressions which will be useful for you during our work at the lesson. Read them and remember.

It’s a pity I can’t answer the question.

Believe it or not I don’t know the answer to the question.

I think the Internet is the greatest (1) invention ever. Think how it has changed the world. So much information is out there. (2) It has totally changed my life. I can chat with friends, download music, buy books and (3) get information I need for my homework. It took days or (4) weeks to do any of these things before the Internet. I spend hours every day online. I think I (5) spend a little too long. I’m sure (6) starring at the computer screen all day isn’t good for my eyes. I think it’s also (7) dangerous for my health. I need to exercise a little more. The only thing I don’t like about the Internet (8) is putting personal information online, especially on (9) special networking sites like Facebook.

T.: And now I’ll give you the texts with gaps and your task is to fill in necessary expressions.

The Tapescript

I think the Internet is the greatest invention ever. Think how it has changed the world. So much information is out there. It has totally changed my life. I can chat with friends, download music, buy books and get all the info I need for my homework. It took days or weeks to do any of these things before the Internet.  I spend hours every day online. I think I spend a little too long. I’m sure staring at a computer screen all day isn’t good is that it can be dangerous. I don’t really like putting my personal information online, especially on social networking sites like Facebook.

http://www.

T.: It’s clear that after listening to the text you couldn’t find answer to a few questions in the second column in the table “Know – Want – Have Learn”. That’s why we will read some information about the Internet and its role in our life. First of all let’s  read a piece of information in the textbooks on page 195 “What is the Internet?” and then the text “The Internet and Modern life”. Remember to fill in the table “Know – Want to know – Have Learnt”.

Приложение: Тексты “What is the Internet?” и “The Internet and Modern life”.

“What is the Internet?” 195)

The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. Each Internet computer called a “host”, is independent. Its operators can choose which Internet  services to use. The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web.

“The Internet and Modern life” (распечатка текста)

The Internet is a part of our ordinary life. Everybody knows that the Internet is a global computer network, which embraces hundreds of millions of users all over the world and helps us to communicate with each other in our ordinary life.

The history of the Internet began in the United States in 1969. It was a military experiment, designed to help to survive during a nuclear war.

Nowadays most of the people use the network only for sending and receiving e-mail messages, people who do not have e - mail are seen as old - fashioned. We use the Internet for reading news, available on some dedicated news servers, and for getting necessary information.

In many countries the Internet could provide businessmen with its own reliable system of telecommunications. The commercial use of the network is constantly increasing. Now you can work through the Internet, gambling and playing through the net.

However, there are some problems. The most important problem is security. When you send an e-mail, your message can travel through many different networks and computers.

There is no effective control in the Internet, because a huge amount of information circulating through the net.

Thieves and hackers may gain access to personal information. Additionally there is an endless amount of violent and sexual sites.

Besides that anyone who surfs the Internet for long periods is clinically ill and needs medical treatment.

Thus there are some pros and cons. But no doubt the Internet is a great achievement of mankind.

T.: I’m sure that now you can answer  the questions in the  third column in the table “Know – Want – Have Learnt”.

T.: It’s a time to go on our work and I propose you to answer my questions about the Internet and work with the cluster. Answering the questions you can use the third column in the table “Know – Want to know – Have Learnt” and the table “thick and “thin” questions.

Answer the questions and fill in the cluster (Слайд №9).

What are we going to talk about? When we begin to talk about the Internet the first thing is a global computer network. What is it connected with? What does the Internet help people with? How does it extend the limits of communication? What do people learn with the help of the Internet? Why do people enjoy the Internet? But some people think that the Internet is a problem. Why do they think so? What negative influence do social networks have? What conclusion can you draw?

T.: We have done lot of work today. Divide into two groups. Your task is to speak about positive (one group) and negative (the other group) points of the Internet. Fill in the cluster and be ready to speak about the Internet and its “pros” and “cons”.

T.: If you are ready, please, express your opinion about the Internet and its “pros” and “cons”.

T.: Coming up to the end of the work at the lesson I’d like some of you  (1-2) to tell us what you have learned about the Internet.

St. 1: …

St. 2: …

T.: To sum up the lesson I’d like you to express your opinion if we achieved the tasks which you had put for yourselves at the beginning of the lesson. What do you think of the lesson?

St. 1: We have learnt a lot about the Internet, its advantages and disadvantages. The aims of the lesson were achieved  through listening comprehension, reading, speaking.

T: I’d like to thank you for your work. Your marks are...

The whole lesson we worked to help you to write an essay.

Your hometask is: to write an essay “The Internet: How It affects Us”

T: Goodbye for now! See you again!
