COURSE OUTCOMES
RUSSIAN IV NATIVE
(ELEMENTARY)
(July 2015)
Russian IV Native (Elementary) is designed for nine & ten-year-old Russian native speakers and Russian near native speakers. Near native speakers are those students who are able to speak like natives but lack academic language, reading, and writing skills. Our Near Native Speakers (multilingual students who come from mixed marriages) who are fluent in conversational Russian will be enrolled in the Russian Native Course. If these students will encounter some difficulty, they will be free to complete a fewer number of units in this course.
Russian IV Native (Elementary) is an equivalent to the fourth grade of the native Russian language curriculum.
Russian IV Native introduces students to practical application and development of reading and writing skills. The student should be engaged in Essential Unit ten throughout the course of the school year. This unit should be entered in the PBE program as one period a week.
At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to read a lengthy text (80 and more words per minute), read texts and retell them in oral and written forms, learn about the parts of speech, and work with synonyms and antonyms. Students will use listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through various strategies and immersion in the atmosphere of the language, culture and traditions.
This course supports and is aligned to the success orientations, competencies, and knowledge noted in the QSI Program Outcomes. Russian IV Native consists of ten essential units. This course is divided into Essential Outcomes and Introduced/Practiced Outcomes. The Essential Outcomes must be assessed for mastery. The Introduced/ Practiced Outcomes are intended to expose the student to the skills that will be mastered in the future essential units, engage the student in ongoing and necessary skills, and to practice the outcomes previously taught.
The normal pace for this course leads to the mastery of ten essential units for those QSI schools that offer Russian three to five times a week. Those schools that offer this course less than five periods a week students will master the following appropriate number of units:
- 3 periods a week equals 6 units mastered
- 4 periods a week equals 8 units mastered
- 5 periods a week equals 10 units mastered
Depending on the individual school programs, Russian IV Native could be allotted three to five periods per week with a period being a minimum of 45 minutes.
This course is a prerequisite for Russian V Native (Elementary).
An outline of the ten essential units follows. These units are primarily designed to be taught in order.
