There was a man whose wife was dumb. He was very sorry for her and never gave up hope that there would be a cure for her. Some years passed and one day the man found a doctor who promised to help. After a difficult operation, the wife returned home. And...what a miracle! She was able to talk! The man was very happy, but his happiness did not last long; once the woman started to talk, she could not stop. She talked day and night, and it started to drive her husband mad. Finally, he had had enough and went back to the doctor who had done the operation. The man asked the doctor to help him again and make his wife dumb, just the way she had been before. The doctor just shook his head. "I'm sorry I can't make your wife dumb again" he said, "but if it makes you so unhappy, I can make you deaf".

A telephone conversation

Hi, could I speak to Mrs. Dillon? Speaking. My name is Mary Daren. I saw your advert in the paper. It said you were looking for a friendly, reliable girl, who is also patient and polite? Oh, yes! I need a babysitter for my eight-year-old daughter. My mother usually looks after my daughter but she is going away for a month, so I need somebody to help me. And I am looking for a summer job. Great. Do you have time in July? My mother is going away in July. Oh yes, July is perfect. Would you like me to work all day? Oh no, just the first part of the day, from 9 a. m. to 2 p. m. Then I will be back from work. That sounds fine. What other qualifications do you require? Yes, we do. We need somebody who can help my daughter catch up with her German. Do you speak any German? A little bit, I am learning it at school. Well. I see... Oh, sorry. I forgot to ask you. How old are you? Because we do not want anybody younger than seventeen. Well, actually I am nearly seventeen. My birthday is in August, That is all right then! Let us meet sometime this week for a chat about all the details.
