1.1. Артикль the НЕ употребляется

Правило 1. Перед названиями стран и континентов

Исключения:

the RF (the Russian Federation)
the UK (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
the USA (the United States of America)
the Netherlands – Нидерланды (Holland - неофициальное название этой страны)
the Irish Republic
the Chech Republic
the Philippines
the United Arab Emirates

Правило 1.1. (дополнительное) БЕЗ артикля the употребляются следующие географические названия:

Europe, Eurasia, Antarctica, Central Asia, North(South) America, Latin America, South-East Asia, Northern Africa, Western (Eastern Siberia), Siberia, etc.

Исключения: the Crimea (Крым), the Far East, the Middle East, the Midlands, the Highlands,

the Lowlands (собирательная функция артикля the, см. окончание –s на конце)

Правило 2. С названиями городов артикль the НЕ употребляется

Исключение: the Hague –Гаага

1.2. Артикль the употребляется:

Правило 3. Перед названиями сторон света (так как они единственные в мире)

the East, the West, the South, the North

Правило 4. Перед существительными обозначающими тип географического ландшафта

The seaside — побережье
The coast — берег
The country — загород, деревня
The countryside — сельская местность
The forest - лес
The wood(s) — лес
The mountains - горы
The jungle - джунгли

Правило 5. Перед названиями водных пространств: океанов, морей, рек, каналов, проливов, озер, кроме заливов.

Правило 6. Перед названиями горных цепей и архипелагов островов (собирательная функция артикля the, см. окончание –s на конце)

Исключения:

горные пики Elbrus, Everest, Ben Nevis, etc.

одиночные острова Cuba, Cyprus, Haiti, etc.
