DIVISIONAL ORGANIZATION

In order to simplify the problem of running trains all railroads are divided into operating units, called divisions. A division may be three or four hundred miles long or they may be only thirty or forty miles long. Each division is known to operate as a small railroad. Some trains run only between terminals on a single division. Some trains have their terminals on different divisions. They may change engines and crews several times in the course of their journey. A division is operated under the direction of a division superintendent, who is responsible for the movement of the trains. On most of the railroads the division superintendent also supervises the maintenance and repair of the track and the rolling stock of his divisions, but on some railroads his duty is only the supervision of train movements. At any time the train is on only one division, and its movements are carefully controlled. On large railroad systems there are more general superintendents than on smaller ones.
