Abstract. Attractiveness of a university reflects its ability to attract the best students. The aim of the research was to identify the main factors influencing the students’ choice in Russia. Average unified state examination (USE) scores of applicants, admitted to a university, were used as a dependent variable.
The paper provides a review of theoretical models and empirical studies of criteria used by high school applicants. Our econometric analyses showed that the key factors in the selection of the university is are: university’s brand, success of its graduates in finding jobs, university’s incomes, quality of teaching staff and its the location of a university. In some cases research activity is also significant. Technical colleges, which have retained their specialization, are among the most attractive, and the attractiveness of technical colleges, which increased the percentage of students of social and economic disciplines, is below average.
The results of this study can be used by rectorsthe heads of higher education institutions as evidence-based measures to increase demand for universities. First, efforts are needed to improve reputation, including the dissemination of information on the Internet about achievements of graduates and scientific achievements, etc.
Keywords: Russian universities, USE, attractiveness, student’s choice, quality of education, quality of teaching, technical colleges
