Difficult job Happy times Animal rights Mission Impossible The fastest way Learning English is a long, slow process. There are lots of verb tables, vocabulary exercises, quizzes and tests. The only way to get there quicker is to go and live in the UK for some months. That will help to learn it faster! Once a week we get a spelling test and we have to memorise fifty new words. I usually get 45 or more but it is too difficult to get them all. It is the biggest homework we have to do. Where can we find the time? It’s really hard for the nurses. They often work 12 hours and if they make a mistake their patients can die. And their pay is so low. Yet, most of them just get on with it without complaining and they always seem to be cheerful, kind and interested in their patients. It was better in the 1970s. Our lives weren’t so closely connected with mobile phones. There were no speed cameras. The music was brilliant — Glam, Prog and Punk Rock. And the fashion was great.

HOT DOG

Even though they were born in Europe, hot dogs have become as American as apple pie.
But why on earth are they called hot dogs?
In one version, hot dogs were originally called “dachshund sausages” because they looked like a long thin German dog, a “dachshund”. A newspaper cartoonist drew a picture of barking dachshunds between buns and labelled them “hot dogs” because he couldn’t spell “dachshund”. The trouble is, no one has ever found that cartoon, so we don’t know if it really happened!
Whatever they were called, they had become part of American culture by the 1920s. People ate them at baseball games, horse races, country fairs and circuses. Today, America is hot dog headquarters, but not everyone can agree on the perfect way to eat one! New Yorkers like it with onions and sauerkraut, but folks from Chicago prefer it with tomatoes, pickles and peppers.

Hot dogs came up in America. It is known that hot dogs got their name thanks to a cartoon. The hot dog is the official food at baseball games and horse races. A hot dog is a perfect healthy food. The hot dog became part of American culture in the 19th century. People like to eat hot dogs in different ways.

James

My name is James, I’m fourteen, and I moved to this town with my family three months ago. My parents lived here when they were young, but my brother and I didn’t know anyone here except a few aunts and uncles we’d met when we’d spent a couple of weeks with my grandparents, during school holidays. When I started school, one of my cousins, Sophie, who was in my class, was very friendly for the first week and I was happy to have a friend in a strange place. Then, for no reason, she stopped talking to me and I felt very hurt and lonely for several weeks.

In the end, I made some more friends and since I got to know them, I’ve been fine. Now Sophie is having a disco party for her birthday next week and she has invited me. I don’t want to go. My brother says he heard someone say she only asked me because her parents said she had to. But my mum and dad say it would be rude not to accept. Some of my new friends are invited, too. How can I show Sophie that she can’t behave so badly towards me without causing a family quarrel?
