A Dog and a Piece of Meat
A dog walked along a road over a field. He carried a big piece of meat in his teeth. He wanted to eat it in the field, far from other dogs.

“I think I must take that piece of meat away from the other dog,” said the dog to himself.
With these words the dog jumped into the water, but he did not see the other dog. When he got out of the river he had no meat in his teeth.

I. This is a story about British life.
These days most people in Britain do not wear very formal clothes. But sometimes it is important to wear the right thing. Many British people don’t think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. At the theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on what you like – from jeans and sweaters to T-shirts and shorts. Anything is OK as long as you look clean and neat.
But men in offices usually wear suits and ties and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and businessmen wear formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men wear ties and women wear smart dresses. Jeans and open shirts are sometimes are not allowed. It is difficult to say exactly what people wear in Britain because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. Or ask the advice of a friend or your host. You’ll feel more relaxed if you don’t look too different from everyone else.

Many things can be scary, and everyone is afraid of something.
1. Read the text.
Accidents. Going on airplanes. Dogs and snakes or spiders. Different people are afraid of different things. It is good when you are afraid of some things. You must be careful with fire, electricity, and swimming pools.
Fight your fears! If you keep your fears inside they will grow. If you talk about them your fears will become smaller. Talk to a friend or a grown-up.
Learn more about them. If you are afraid of snakes, find out how snakes help people.
Go slowly. If you are afraid of water, don’t try to get over your fear in one day. First, put your feet in the water. The next time, splash your face.
Think about good things. “I can make friends at this new school.”
Use “fear-breakers”. If you are afraid of the dark, ask for a night light. Leave your door open.
Read about other children who have been afraid of something. There are lots of books about children who had the same fears as you. Find out what they did. Remember! You are growing taller and older and little by little, you will grow out of your fears.
