Цель урока: Обобщение лексико-грамматического материала по теме: «Соединенное королевство. Что это такое?»

Задачи урока:

Обучающие:

1. Расширять лексический запас по теме.

2. Учить извлекать информацию из текста.

3. Учить строить аргументированное высказывание.

Развивающие:

1. Развивать навык чтения с общим охватом содержания.

2. Развивать языковую догадку.

Ход урока:

1. Приветствие. Сообщение темы.

- Good morning. How are you? Glad to see you.

- The topic of our lesson is “WHAT IS THE UK?”

3. Беседа и введение в тему “The UK

England.

P.1 England is one of the parts in the UK. It is washed by the English Channel and the North Sea. The capital of England is London. It was known as Londinium in ancient times. Britain was invaded by the Romans, the Saxons, the Vikings and they brought their traditions and culture.

P.2 England has its own custom, it is Guy Fawkes` Day as the day of fireworks and bonfires. Londoners are proud of their parks which are full of trees, grass, flowers and water. They are Hyde Park, St. James Park, Regent`s Park, Kensington Gardens. The floral symbol of England is a red rose.

P.3 There are big cities in London: Oxford and Cambridge are university cities; Liverpool is the place of the famous group “The Beetles”, Stratford–upon-Avon is the birthplace of the famous play writer William Shakespeare. People visit London to see Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, The Tower, Trafalgar Square.

Scotland.

P.4 Scotland is a country in the United Kingdom to the north of England. Its symbol is a thistle, its patron saint is St. Andrew. The country is divided in Highlands and Lowlands. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Glasgow is its largest and busiest town. Glasgow is the heart of industry and Edinburgh is famous for its ancient history and places of interest.

P.5 They are the old Castle – a fortress and then the royal palace; the Holyrood palace as the residence of the Queen in Scotland; Princess Street with the popular shopping centre and the monument after the famous writer Sir Walter Scott (The Scott Monument). Tourists come to Scotland to watch the Edinburgh military tattoo – the world-famous festival. The performers play military music and march along the streets.

Wales.

P.6 Wales is a land of green fields, waterfalls, forests and farms. Wales has mountains, including Snowdon, the second highest mountain in Britain. The floral symbol of the country is daffodil, because there are a lot of valleys with spring flowers in Wales. The other one is leek as the favourite food of the patron – St. David. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. There are other big towns there too, Swansea and Newport among them. The Welsh people speak English and Welsh as like Scottish and Irish Gaelic.

Northern Ireland.

P.7 Northern Ireland was created in 1921 by an act of the British parliament. The majority of the people are known as the Scots and Irish. English is the official language. The capital and the largest city of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The economy of Northern Ireland is based on agriculture and industries like shipbuilding and textiles. Other manufactures include electronic equipment, food, tobacco and chemicals.

P.8 The other cities are Londonderry, Ulster. There are two universities, colleges, Grand Opera House, Belfast Philharmonic Society. The Ulster Symphony Orchestra hosts annual festivals. Northern Ireland has two national museums: the Ulster Museum in Belfast, which houses a collection of Irish antiquities; and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

P.9 The climate of Northern Ireland is mild: it is not hot in summer and it is not cold in winter. There is rainfall during the year.

The floral symbol is a shamrock.

а) Guy Fawkes` Day

Guy Fawkes` Night is celebrated on the 5th of November. It is known as Bonfire Night and marks the plot organized to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. Many people light bonfires and fireworks. People make a Guy and burn it. They eat baked potatoes and hot dogs. Children ask for money: “A penny for the Guy”. They buy fireworks.

b) St. Valentine`s Day

St. Valentine's Day has its origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which celebrated the coming spring in the Roman calendar. According to the legend, Valentine was an Italian bishop who secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman Empire. The legend says that he was burnt at the stake.

Now, St. Valentine's Day is the day of sweethearts. On this day, people send presents or flowers to those whom they love. Most people send «valentines», greeting cards. People buy valentines or make cards themselves.
