Vocabulary

1.  attend v - посещать, присутствовать (на лекциях), attend lectures - посещать лекции, attend classes - посещать занятия, e. g. Students do not attend lectures on Sunday.

2.  begin v - начинать(ся), e. g. Our classes begin at 9 o'clock.

3.  breakfast - n завтрак; have breakfast - завтракать, e. g. Pete has breakfast at 7 o'clock; have dinner - обедать; have supper - ужинать; have lunch – есть полдник, обедать;

4.  bus n. - автобус; bus stop - автобусная остановка; e. g. The bus stop is near my house.

5.  evening n. - вечер; in the evening вечером, on Sunday evening - в воскресенье вечером; morning – утро, in the morning - утром; afternoon - после полудня, in the afternoon днем.

6.  do v. – делать, do morning exercises - делать утреннюю зарядку, e. g. When do you do your morning exerсises?

7.  finish v. - заканчивать, e. g. After he finishes breakfast he goes to the bus stop.

8.  get v. - добираться, достигать, e. g. He gets to the University by bus.

get up v. - вставать (с постели), e. g. She gets up early.

9.  go v. – идти, ходить; gо out - выходить, бывать в обществе, e. g. My friend and I go out on Sundays.

10.  home n. - дом, домашний очаг; at home - дома, e. g. He is at home now.

go home – идти домой, e. g. I often go home by bus.

arrive home - приезжать домой; leave home - уходить, уезжать из дома

11.  like v. – любить, нравиться, e. g. I like to go to the cinema or to the сoncert.

12.  listen v. – слушать (tо); listen to music - слушать музыку, e. g. He listens to music in the evening.

13.  sometimes adv. - иногда, e. g. Sometimes we like to listen to the radio.

14.  spend v. - тратить, e. g. We spend 5 or 6 hours at the University.

15.  study v. - учиться, изучать, e. g. Pete studies at the University, he studies economics.

study n. (обычно pl ) приобретение знаний, обучение; begin one's studies - приступать к учебе

16.  switch on v. - включать, e. g. Don't switch. on the light. switch off - выключать

17.  take v. – брать, e. g. It takes me 10 minutes to get to the University. - Мне нужно 10 минут, чтобы добраться до университета.

18.  usually adv. - обычно, e. g. In the morning he usually leaves home at 8.30.

19.  walk v. - ходить пешком, идти, e. g. Sometimes he walks in the evening.

20.  wash v. - мыть, умываться, e. g. We wash in the bathroom in the morning.

21.  watch v. - смотреть, e. g. My father likes to watch TV in the evening.

22.  week n. – неделя, week-day n. - будний день, e. g. Our family gets up early on the week-days.

23.  work v. - работать; work hard (at smth) - усердно, старательно работать; work at the library - работать в библиотеке

Мне требуется 30 минут, чтобы добраться до университета. 5. Я умываюсь в ванной. 6. В 7.20 он выходит из дома и идет на авто­бусную остановку. 7. После ужина наша семья слушает радио или смотрит телевизор. 8. По воскресеньям мы ходим в кино. 9. По вече­рам Кэт обычно дома.

Pronunciation Practice on Essential Vocabulary

Ex.1. Pronounce the following words

a) with the stress on the first syllable:

finish, cinema, student, dinner, concert, supper, morning, library, breakfast, evening, practical, exercise, week-day

b) with the stress on the second syllable:

arrive, attend, begin

c) with two stresses:

get up, go out, switch on, afternoon, switch off, university

Ex.2. Repeat and translate the following

a) words: attend, arrive, breakfast, bus-stop, home, library, course, spend, walk, wash, watch, like, usually, sometimes, week-days;

b) word combinations: in the morning, in the evening, in the after­noon, on Wednesday evening, to attend a practical course, to have dinner, to do morning exercises, to go out, to go home, to leave home, to listen to the radio, to watch TV, to study at the Uni­versity, to finish breakfast, to work hard;

c) sentences: I usually leave home at half past 8. His working day begins early. Students attend 3 or 4 lectures every day. Some­times Tom arrives home late. Switch off the light, please.

Ex.2. Arrange the words of similar meaning in pairs.

Ex.3. Arrange the words of contrary meaning in pairs.

Special Difficulties

Ex.1. Make up sentences using the model given. Mind the use of the pre­position "to" after the verb "to listen".

Model: What does she usually do in the evening? - - She listens to the radio.

1. Mike... the news. 2. We... music. 3. Jane... a record. 4. The students... a new radio-program, 5. My father... the 9 o'clock news.

Ex.2. Make up short dialogues on analogy. Use the given prompt words in all the models. Mind the use of the auxiliary verb "do" with the word combinations like "to have breakfast".

Model A: -Do you have breakfast at home? - Yes, I do.

Model B: When do you have breakfast? - At 8.
