My favourite foreign writer is W. Shakespeare. I love his comedies and tragedies: “Romeo and Juliet”; “Julius Caesar”, “Hamlet”, “Othello”, “King Lear” and others. Shakespeare’s plays can teach people to be kinder to each other.
I think reading is important because books teach us how to live and understand other people. They help to solve problems of everyday life.
My school
I shall never forget my first day at school. It was really one of the happiest events in my life. The day when I received my school–leaving certificate was both a happy and a sad one.
The school that I studied in is a big grey building surrounded by old trees and beautiful flower–beds. To the right of the building one can see the playground. I liked to have my classes in physical training outside. After classes we could also play basketball, volleyball and football there.
The hall which is on the ground floor is rather large and nice. There is also a gymnasium with changing rooms and showers. On the ground floor you can find the headmaster’s office, the library, the reading hall and the canteen.
The class-rooms, laboratories, the teachers’ room are to be found on the upper floors.
On the walls of the corridors you can see nice pictures, flowers and school wall-newspapers. There are a lot of classrooms and laboratories in the school. There one can see white desks and blackboards, diagrammes, pictures, slogans and portraits on the walls, depending on the subjects taught. Our English study is equipped with tape–recorders. There are a lot of records, posters, maps.
The pupils are taught many other subjects besides English. They are Russian and Russian Literature, mathematics, physics, biology, geography, physical training, music and singing classes, drawing and so on.
From the fifth form the boys and girls start to work in the fitter’s and carpenter’s workshops. The girls have domestic classes. They learn to sew, knit and cook. The pupils in the senior forms have to do practical work at enterprises or on farms. In spring time, after school ends they work there for some weeks.
I shall always remember my school because it is there that we make our first friends. It is just there that we are taught to love and appreciate music, literature and art. It is just at school that we are taught to love our Motherland.
Olympic Games
Olympic Games are the greatest international sports games in the world.
Many people want the Olympic Games to be held in their cities, but it depends on the decision of the international Olympic Committee. The Olympic Games were held in the cities of Europe, America, Asia and Australia.
The former Soviet Union has been taking part in the summer Olympic Games since 1952 and in the winter Olympics since 1956. Hundreds of athletes have become Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalists and record–setters, a number of them more than once.
The 22nd Summer Olympic Games were held in Moscow in 1980 (from July 19 to August 3). Many athletes, guests, journalists attended them, it was for the first time that the Olympic Games were held in our country. The Russian people did their best to prepare for the guests’ arrival. New sports complexes and living quarters were built, old ones were restored. Stadiums, cycling tracks, swimming pools were equipped with various modern equipment, devices and computers.
About half a million spectators were present at many breath–talking competitions, millions in the Soviet Union and abroad watched them on television. Everywhere we saw the smile of Misha, the little bear who had been chosen as the mascot of the Games according to the tradition. For two weeks the flag with five coloured interweaved rings flew over Moscow and the fire lit by the sunrays in Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, was burning above it. Our Russian sportsmen won 80 gold, 69 silver, and 6 bronze medals during these Games. The 22nd Olympic Games were the holiday of health, peace and friendship.
Russia tries to develop all the Olympic sports as mush as possible, and it is not by chance that among Olympic Champions and other medalists there are representatives of practically every sport.
In Russia everybody knows Sergei Bubka, the world and Olympic champion and world record–breaker in the pole–vault. The celebrated athlete has more than once been recognized in the world as an “athlete of the year”. Bubka’s achievements are fantastic. More than 20 times he renewed his own records.
There are a lot of other well-known names among Russian athletes: Yevgeny Plyushchenko, Irina Slutskaya, Pavel Bure, Andrey Arshavin, Ilya Kovalchuk and many others. I’m proud to say that there is a famous Olympic medalist from Belgorod. Her name is Svetlana Khorkina and she’s our outstanding athlete. She’s got some Olympic gold and silver medals in gymnastics.
English Language in Modern World
Nowadays it’s necessary to know a foreign language. Knowledge of foreign languages helps us to develop friendship and understanding among people. The total number of languages in the world is from 2500 to 5000. I study English because I want to communicate with people from other countries, I want to understand their culture and traditions.
English is very popular now. It’s the language of computers, science, business, sport and politics. It’s spoken all over the world. It is the official language of United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia. There are more than 750 million speakers of English in the world. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations.
English is the language of the great literature. It’s the language of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and others. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It’s the language of computer technology.
I think that to know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. Besides, speaking English you can read papers, magazines, watch satellite TV Programmes. If you like traveling, you can go anywhere without being afraid that other people will not understand you. So, we can’t do without English today and I’m happy to learn this wonderful language.
My Future Profession
(An Economist)
Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life for millions of school-leavers.
Many roads are opened before them: vocational and technical schools, institutes and universities. It is not an easy thing to choose a profession out of more than 2,000 existing in the world. Some people follow the advice of their parents, others can’t decide even after leaving school.
As for me, I made my choice long ago. I want to be an economist. I can’t say that my future work is going to be easy. It requires a specific mentality and a lot of special skills. I’m going to study economics. Economic theory helps us understand how the world works. Many of the decisions we make are economic decisions, many of our interactions with others are influenced by economic institutions. To understand a society, we must have a basic knowledge of economics. I will study different subjects: economic policy, economic systems, various branches of economics: trade, marketing, banking, insurance and other important matters.
I hope hat I will get all necessary skills for my future career. And I think that economics will teach me a new way of looking at the world. I hope that my choice of profession is right. Economics is a matter of current interest. I’m going to study hard to realize all my dreams.
My School Life
I’d like to tell you about my school life. I went to school when I was 6 years old. It was the best school in my town (Valuiky), gymnasium №1. I studied there from 1992 till 2003. My school was nice and comfortable. There were three floors and a lot of classrooms there. I studied Russian, literature, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, history, music, art, physical education and other subjects.
The teachers of my school were high-quality professionals. They did their best to help us in our studying. My form teacher was a teacher of history. She explained everything in details so that we could understand the inner tendencies of all events.
I can say that I had no problems at school because I studied well in all the subjects. My favourite subject was literature because I enjoyed reading looks and I was good at writing poems. I respected my teacher of Russian language and literature because she had a deep knowledge of her subject and took care of her pupils. She was the first person who advised me to become a journalist.
When I was in the 9th form, I took part in Olympics in Russian language and literature. I won the first place in Russian language and the second place in literature.
Our school offered us a lot of out-of-class activities, including several clubs and excursions. .
I shall always remember my school, my teachers and my classmates. I hope that my dream will come true and my favourite school subjects will help me to become a good journalist.
Health Care
As an English proverb says, health is better than wealth. Only healthy people, indeed, can enjoy their lives. But people fall ill from time to time. If this happens they can consult a doctor or use home medicine. I think people should call a doctor only if it is really serious. If a person has a broken leg or arm, or appendicitis, he or she must go to hospital and get special treatment. But if it is not serious, a headache or a cold, for example, a person should stay in bed, keep warm, drink some herbal tea and use home medicine. But it’s better to prevent illness than to cure it. Besides, there are some simple rules that can help us to keep healthy and strong.
First of all, people should start their morning with physical exercise. It will keep them fit and give energy for the whole day.
The second rule is to walk every day and breathe fresh air.
The third rule is to wash hands before eating.
The fourth rule is to eat only healthy food: porridge, fruit and vegetables. People should reduce eating salt, sugar, cakes, bread, sweets, ch products contain a lot of fat and sugar. This food gives a lot of extra energy. If you do not work it out, it becomes fat in your body.
