Business Talk

Mr. Georgis: Good morning, gentlemen. How are you?

Mr. Smolin: Good morning, Mr. Georgis. Fine, thank you, and you?

Mr. G.: Very well, thanks. Have you met Mr. Pratt, head of our commercial department?

Mr. S.: No, I haven’t had the pleasure. How do you do, Mr. Pratt?

Mr. G.: How do you do, Mr. Smolin? It’s nice to meet you. This way, gentlemen, please. Will you sit down? Coffee or tea?

Mr. S.: Tea, please. It's hot day, isn’t it?

Mr. G.: Yes, you may find our climate a bit too hot. But I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here all the same.

Mr. S.: I’m sure I will. Do you mind if we get down to business right now?

Mr. G.: Yes, time’s getting short. Well, gentlemen, I don’t think we need

to read the minutes of the last meeting. Copies of them have been circulated to you.

Mr. S.: Yes, I’ve got a copy. There is no need to go over the same points. Let’s proceed with the discussion of our Draft Contract for the delivery of chemical equipment. What shall we take up today?

Mr. G.: We’re finished with the prices, but there are some comments on the delivery dates and guarantees.

Mr. S.: Is there anything you don’t like about the delivery schedule? The dates are the shortest we can afford.

Mr. G.: But the project is a top priority one. We would ask you to speed up the deliveries.

Mr. S.: All right. We are always ready to cooperate where we can but we can’t give our final reply before we get the manufacturers’ consent.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

Mr. G.: How long will that take?

Mr. S.: About two weeks at the outside.

Mr. G.: All right, we’ll look at this again later.

Mr. S.: Then let’s pass on to the guarantee clause. You are aware, I’m sure, that the equipment we offer you is highly sophisticated, reliable and easy to run. It’s in great demand, you know, and on top of that, our guarantee period is accepted throughout the world.

Mr. G.: You sound very convincing, Mr. Smolin. Well, gentlemen, we’ve been 2 hours on the Draft Contract. How about some lunch?

Mr. S.: That would be very welcome.

Borisov: Thank you.

Stanley: Did you have a good trip?

Borisov: Yes, it was quite nice, thank you.

Stanley: Well, Mr. Borisov, let’s discuss business now. What can I do for you?

Borisov: We know you’ve started producing a new model of pumps. The quality of the model meets our requirements and we’d like to place an order with you. Can you make us an offer for 150 pumps?

Stanley: Sure! When would you like to have the pumps?

Borisov: We require the pumps for immediate shipment.

Stanley: Well, you see, Mr. Borisov, we’re heavy with orders at the moment and can offer you only 50 pumps for now.

Borisov: And what about the balance of 100 pumps?

Stanley: We can start shipping them 6 months after we sign the contract. I think we can deliver the pumps in four lots of 25 pumps each at regular intervals within eight months. Is that all right with you?

Borisov: Not altogether. We require the pumps earlier. Could you start the deliveries, say, four months after we sign the contract?

Stanley: I’m afraid not. We can guarantee, however, that there won’t be any delay in shipment.

Borisov: All right. I think we could agree to that.

Stanley: is there anything else you’d like to discuss, Mr. Borisov?

Borisov: Yes, there’s another point I’d like to clarify. It’s about your delivery terms.

Stanley: As we can provide shipping facilities we usually sell our goods on CIF terms.

Borisov: Well, Mr. Stanley, we can accept your delivery terms. When shall we meet to discuss the price and terms of payment?

Мг. Petrov, an engineer of Soyuzexport, is having ta1ks in Moscow with Мг. Brown of British Asbestos Ltd.

Brown: Good afternoon! Nice to see you again, Мг. Petrov! How аге things with you?

Petrov: Not bad, thank you. And how аге you?

Bгown: Fine, just fine. I always fее1 well in beautifu1 weather 1ike this. We're having such а lot of rain in England now. Well, I suppose we had better get down to business.

Petrov: Yes, certainly. You’ve соmе to sign another contract, haven't you?

Brown: That's right. For next year, actually.

Petrov: Аге you happy with our usual terms of delivery and payment?

Bгown: Yes, quite. As а matter of fact, I’ve соmе here to talk about the price. I'd like to say that the volume of business in the building industry in our country has dropped considerably. This affected the prices of а number of building materials. In this situation it’s quite natural we expect you to revise your prices for  asbestos.
