Pavlovo is a village not far from Tula. It’s not the largest in the region. The people who live in Pavlovo grow vegetables and various kinds of fruit, keep domestic animals: cows, pigs, sheep and even horses. You can also see poultry there – hens, ducks, geese and turkeys. So they try to have everything they need to live well. Among the villagers there is one who likes bees most of all; that is Oleg Smirnov. He has a big country house and an orchard where there are lots of fruit trees. Oleg’s house stands on one of the hills. Between the hills there is a valley. It’ the nicest place. The villagers like to take their children for a walk in the valley. Oleg Smirnov has a large family. Its members live and work together. Oleg takes care of the bees himself, he doesn’t trust them to anybody. He knows much about bees and he always tells his fellow villagers interesting stories about their life. Bees live in colonies. Each colony has only one queen. City-dwellers think that bees gather honey. In fact, they don’t. None of the 10,000 different kinds of bees gathers honey. They gather nectar which is something quite different.
