Two major foundation lessons

Eph. 2:19-22

-These men Jesus was training would be the foundation of a spiritual building, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone.

-He needed some men that would be real men.

-So the Lord is trying to train them for what would come – fiery trials.

Jn. 12:1-3 A lesson of love.

By serving the Lord because you love Him because He is worthy.

Jn. 13: A lesson in submission. To teach to obey no matter what the circumstances are.

  i. Most circumstances seem to be working against you.

ii. We live in a world of sin. We live in a body of sin.

iii. If you are making that decision to live for the Lord, sometimes it gets a bit “lonely.”

  - amongst family, friends, on the job, in the community, etc.

Lesson – No matter how “unreasonable” the demands may be to obey the Lord, submission is still a key to obedience.

bmission is always the best way to get through a situation.

2. Background of events in between the 13th and 14th chapters.

  i. The Lord is training them.

ii. He’s going from Bethany to Jerusalem.

Matt. 21:1-3, 5. This is prophecy from Zachariah. This is the 10th of the month. Matt. 21:12, 13 Jesus here claims His Deity. “my house” means Jehovah’s house – He’s JEHOVAH! 21:17, 18, 19 Jesus cursed the fig tree. Type of Israel. 21:23-27 Dealt with the Pharisees. He didn’t give them an answer. He shut their mouths.

He wasn’t interested in giving them the truth. They didn’t want it. But they wanted power.

22:15-22 dealing with taxes. 22:41-46 Jesus is David’s Lord. Matt. 23:37 Jesus was crying desiring Jerusalem to accept Him, but didn’t. Judgment was to come.

Doctrinally, the Great Tribulation

We need to learn two lessons before this Church Age ends.

ILL. Martin Luther was to stand against the Roman Catholic Church.

“We don’t have but 100 years left.”

I. LESSON IN LOVE (Jn. 12:1-9)

This even happens on a Saturday, the 10th of the month (Exod. 12:3-5, 6).

Mary

1. Mary performed a marvelous act of devotion of love to the Lord Jesus in the proper method at the precise time.

  i. She listened to the words of God (Lk. 10:38-42).

Jesus was in a leper’s house –

2. Not one word was said in this act of love.

  i. Words many times are not necessary.

ii. Actions speak louder than words.

3. Nobody told Mary to do this, but she did it.

It was coming out of a heart of love toward Jesus.

4. She didn’t ask any of the men in the room with Jesus.

She just had to do it.

She loved Him. She just knew that she belonged at the feet of Jesus.

When you do an act of love for the Lord, you don’t have to worry of the results.

It always comes out right no matter what anybody else may say or think.

5. This great act of love and worship cost Mary much money; a whole year’s wage.

  i. Real devotion to the Lord cannot be hid because the whole house was filled with the aroma of the essential oil.

ii. Mary anointed the Lord Jesus for His burial because the death of Christ is more important than the birth of Christ.

iii. Acts of love and worship toward Christ are greater than acts of good will to one’s fellowman.

Real acts of devotion toward God will attract the criticism and opposition (Jn. 12:4).

She just poured out this expensive ointment.

Jesus said “Let her alone” (v. 7).

Matt. 26:12, 13

1. Jesus is worth any act of love toward Him. He is worthy of it.

2. Something is going to have to “break”

If you’re going to do any loving with a sincere heart, your spirit has to break.

For the ointment to get out, the box would have had to break.

3. The cost would not matter (Jn. 12:5)

  i. Expensive or not, He’s worth it.

When it comes to loving the Lord, there are not a lot of rules involved.

You just do it.

Your fellowship ought to be with them that call on the Lord “out of a pure heart.”

4. If the motive is love, He’ll take care of the rest.

  i. When the motive is pure, God honors it.

ii. If you love the pure words of God, if you love the Lord and devote your time with Him and for Him, no matter what happens to you personally, you won’t stay far away.

5. This expression of love does not require talent, education or intelligence.

ILL. When you first got saved.

ILL. When you first got married. You didn’t have to be told how to love.

ILL. Did you cry more, thank Him more then? For salvation, fellowship, etc.?

52 x’s in the Psalms only “cry,” “cried.”

II. LESSON IN SUBMISSION (Jn. 13:1-17)

1. This lesson is at the end of His week just before our Blessed Lord would go to the cross.

  i. This is 4 nights later after Mary anointed the Lord.

2. The Lord was not frantic about what he was going to go through – dying on the cross.

3. He was concerned about leaving them an example.

  i. He would humble himself before those disciples and wash their feet.

FOR WHAT? To teach them a lesson in submission.

Peter resists (v. 6). He is questioning what the Lord is doing.

  ILL. Against your circumstances.

You can’t figure it out (Jn. 13:7).

In short he was trying to teach them something other than just washing their feet – SUBMISSION.

The Lord is so long-suffering, putting up with our stupidity, while trying to teach us something.

The Lord had to put up with Peter’s rash mouth.

1. Always be teachable, learning as a student.

The Lord is saying, “Peter, you don’t know what I’m doing now, but you’ll know later.

I’m trying to teach you something.”

Peter’s persistence in ignorance and disagreement.

Peter is not teachable at this moment.

That is not showing love, humility or submission.

- no respect

-no honor

-no submission

Your questioning why the Lord is washing your feet Peter.

The Lord is saying, “Peter, don’t worry about it. I know what I’m doing.”

But then you persist. Упорствовать “I still don’t agree with you.”

Anything that leads to opposition to the word of God, it makes no difference what emotions you have.

Peter had a false sense of unworthiness.

Yet the Lord was extremely patient and merciful toward him.

Mic. 6:8 to love mercy and humbly walk with God –

Yes the Lord is quite merciful and patient and humble but he never excludes the truth –

APPLICATION:

1. Not about salvation for the NT believer but proper training, discipleship, being part of that building in a practical sense.

2. Where do you stand in that building?

Being a true saint, (in Paul’s epistles, “saint” “sanctified” replaces “disciple in the Gospels and Acts), in a practical sense, YOU SUBMIT!

Personal testimony – I don’t like what the Lord does and what He allows sometimes.

-But that doesn’t matter. His providence is working FOR YOUR GOOD, whether you like that or not.

2. Examples of submission –

Joseph – It doesn’t seem reasonable разумнo справедливo – Joseph being sold, does right anyway, ends up in a prison.

-Results – He submitted. God gave him the opportunity to interpret Pharaoh’s dream.

Joseph ‘saves’ the Jewish nation during a very sever famine.

Blind man to be lead out of the city for Jesus to spit (плевал) on him.

-Results – the man’s eyes are opened.

John on Patmos – John is left on an island. He was the closest to the Lord, “whom Jesus loved,”

ILL. has to experience bitterness (Rev. 10:10) left on an island as a prisoner.

-Results of submission – i. The book of revelation, the greatest book of future events.

Martin Luther – within the walls of a monastery he reads “The just shall live by faith.” Leaves the Catholic system, stood against Popery.

-Ends up being hounded by the Whore.

-Hides in a castle.

-Results – the German text of the Reformation. The submission to the will of God causes persecution but God bless that. Germany became a world power.

Paul – stoned, beat, shipwreck, etc. Plus a “thorn in the flesh.”

He was told to SUBMIT, “my grace is sufficient”

Results – 14 epistles of the New Testament.

We dare to question what the Lord is doing.

We a speck of dirt, question what God is doing.

The Lord just goes about doing what He’s supposed to be doing.

Our job is to simply love Him. He is worthy of it.

SUBMIT TO HIM. He is worthy of it.

It is a matter of simply SUBMITTING and trusting.

SOMEDAY

  i. All these clouds of hindrance, and curtain of the unknown will be pulled back.

ii. I’m going to see Him literally.

3. In the meantime we’re to LOVE Him, and SUBMIT to Him.

1 Pet. 2:13

Покоряйтесь каждому установлению человеческому ради Господа: царю ли, как верховному;

Eph. 5:22

Are you kidding Lord? Do you the stuff that he does? Me submit?

Yeah, Peter ‘shot his mouth off’ yeah he wept bitterly for denied the Lord, yet when he heard the word of the Lord,

Peter got it right. He changed immediately and completely around, and way over to the other side.

But at least his heart got right.

He expressed the change!

So Jesus leaves us an EXAMPLE of SUBMISSION and HUMILITY

Jn. 13:14, 15

In the end, these two lessons are the key to true happiness (Jn. 13:17)

True happiness is found in complete obedience to the word of God (v. 17).

You’ll go farther with these two foundational lessons.

You’ve never met anybody that loves the Lord TOO much or submit to the Lord TOO much.

Jesus is coming soon.

We’ve got TWO vital lessons, foundational lessons.

What are you going to do about it?
