MY  MEALS

It goes without saying that I prefer to have meals at home. At the weekend I like to get up late and have a good breakfast of scrambled eggs, or pancakes, or something like that. But on weekdays I’m always short of time in the morning. So I  just have a cup of strong tea or coffee and  couple of sandwiches.

As  I  spend a lot of time at the college (usually seven or eight hours)  it’s necessary to have a snack  at midday just to keep me going. That’s why  I  go to the  canteen to have a snack.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

But  I  enjoy my evening meal at home. My mother is a wonderful cook and her dinners are always delicious and various.

To begin with, we usually have some salad  --  tomato and cucumber salad or mixed salad.  For the first course we have some  soup  --  noodle, mushroom or cabbage soup, or maybe some fish soup for a change. For the main course we have meat, chicken or fish dishes, for example, steak or fried fish with spaghetti  or potatoes (boiled or fried). We also have lot of vegetables --  green  peas, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers.  I  prefer meat to fish but my mother makes me eat  fish from time to time. She says  it’s  good for my brains.

For dessert we have some fruit, fruit juice  or a cup of  tea with a slice of cake.

On Sundays  we sometimes go to McDonald’s.  I  like everything  there: cheeseburgers, hamburgers and Big Macs, apple pies and fruit cocktails. But  unfortunately, they say it’s not very healthy to eat at McDonald’s.

SANDWICH

Once there lived a man in England. His name was Sandwich and he was very rich. He liked to play cards. He could play cards very well and was the best player of his time. Often he played all day and night. One day he played for 24 hours without stopping. He did not leave the card table even to eat. Servants had to bring food for him. They brought him some meat and bread. He did not want to stop playing while he ate. He put the meat between two pieces of bread. In this way he was able to continue playing. INTERNATIONAL FOOD

THE HOT DOG

A hot dog is a funny name for a food, isn’t it? It really is.

The story below may give you a good idea of what a hot dog is.

The Germans invented the hot dog and called it “the frankfurter”, after Frankfurt, a German city.

Americans bought frankfurters for the first time in the 1860’s. They gave it different name “dachshund (dэеksnd)

sausages”. A dachshund  («такса») is a dog from Germany with a very long body and a short legs, which looks like a sausage.

Dachshund sausages became popular in New York, especially at basketball games. At games the men walked

up and down the stadium, and said, “Get your dachshund sausages”.

One day in 1906 Tad Dorgan went to a baseball game.

He was a newspaperman. When he saw the men with the  dachshund sausages, he got an idea for a picture. The next day Tad Dorgan produced a picture of a piece of bread with

a dachshund inside. He didn’t know how to spell the name of this dog, so he wrote, “Get your hot dogs” – under the picture.

People liked the picture and the new name. And soon the name became very popular.

Now hot dog is a common food in Russia, as well. You can buy it almost anywhere, and if you are hungry you don’t have enough time for dinner, a hot dog can make a really good snack.
