Houses in the USA ( p.133)
The USA is often pictured as a country of skyscrapers. In fact, it is not quite so. The tall buildings are located in the centre (downtown), housing offices of large firms, banks and shops. Real America begins with little cosy houses designed for one family with children. Each house has its own style and "face"; its inhabitants decorate it with love and care. Of course, young people usually don't bother about having a house of their own until their mid-twenties, and prefer renting an apartment to buying a house. As soon as they get engaged, they start looking for a suitable house to live in. Engagement lasts from half a year to three years (sometimes even longer), but anyway by the age of thirty the young couple starts living in a house of their own.
A typical house is two-storeyed. On the ground floor a sitting room, a hall and a kitchen are situated, while upstairs there are bedrooms. A garage is downstairs. An American will say: "I live in a two-bedroom house" which means the house is not very large, or: "There are five bedrooms in my house", which means the house is quite large. In front of the house there is usually a small garden or a lawn. In the basement there is often a laundry and sometimes even a gym! Winters are seldom severe in the USA, so the walls are not thick. The houses are built very quickly — it will take a building company three to four months to build a new house. Of course, there are all modern conveniences.
The houses may be located rather far from the centre. Living far from the centre is not a problem as every family member has a car.

My flat.
I live in a new 16-storeyed block of flats. It’s situated in a very picturesque place not far from the Moskva River. There is a big supermarket on the ground floor and it’s very convenient to do everyday shopping.
Our flat is on the fifth floor. It’s very comfortable and well-planned. We have all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, gas, hot and cold running water and a telephone. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. There is also a balcony and we can enjoy a lovely view of the river.
The largest room in our flat is the living room and we use it as a dining room and as a sitting room. In the middle of the room there is a large table and six chairs round it. Opposite the window there is a wall unit with lots of books and a TV-set. There are two comfortable armchairs and a small coffee table in the right corner. There is also a sofa and an electric fire in our sitting room. We like the living room best of all, because in the evenings we gather there to have tea, watch TV, talk and just relax and rest.
My room is the smallest room in our flat, but it is very cosy and light. There is a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, an armchair and several bookshelves in my room. There is a thick carpet on the floor. The walls in my bedroom are yellow and there are some big posters on them. I like my room very much but from time to time I change it round. I quite often move the bed and change posters on the wall.
Our kitchen is large and light. It is well-equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave oven, a coffeemaker, a toaster and a dishwasher. We use it as a dining room in the mornings.

It is early spring now, but the Volkovs are already making plans for their summer holidays because it is always better to arrange everything beforehand than to make a fuss the last minute.
Vlad has already decided to go to St. Petersburg with Lena and his friends from college. They want to visit the Hermitage and Petergof and many other places of interest. They will go there by bus. Nina and Boris are planning to go abroad to Prague or to Warsaw for a week or two, if they are through with their repairs. Now Alexei and his parents are discussing where to go.
Father: Well, Alexei, what are your plans for summer holidays?
Alexei: It is difficult to say anything for sure now, but I think I will spend the whole July in the sports camp, if nothing changes. My coach has already included me in the list of the people who go there.
Mother: What are you planning to do in June and August, then?
Alexei: I think I'll either stay in town or go to the country to live with grandmother and grandfather. Besides, we have a tournament in football in June. Our team has strong chances to win.
Father: So far as I understand, you've already made plans for June and July. What about August? Would you like to go with us somewhere?
Alexei: Most willingly. Where are you planning to go?
Father: We are thinking about going to the seaside, if you have nothing against it.
Mother: We can spend a month by the sea sunbathing, swimming, diving and having nothing to do.
Alexei: Which is the best place to go, in your opinion?
Father: What would you both say about going to the Crimea?
Alexei: Why, I was there when I was a little boy, and I don't
remember much except a tiresome journey by train. I wouldn't go
there if I were you.
Father: Going by train in summer is very uncomfortable. But this time we won't go by train. We can fly there, if you want to. It will take no more than three hours to get to Sochi. You will enjoy wonderful views while we go. Or we might go there by bus with air-conditioning: buses are comfortable. If we buy a voucher to a resort or a holiday centre we won't have to take trouble about meals and acсommodatiоn.
Mother: I must say I am airsick.
Alexei: Resorts are boring. I can suggest you doing a more exciting thing: why don't we go by car? We can travel as much as we want to, visiting as many places as we like. We won't have to book tickets and hotel rooms in advance, or to queue in а booking office. We will visit all the towns along the coast, provided that we have time.
Father: When I come to think about it, it seems a very attractive idea, except for the fact that you don't drive and I will have to drive all the way there and back. But still I have nothing against it: we can travel all over the Crimean coast or stay in one place for the whole month, if we like.
Alexei: And we don't have to carry the luggage. Just put everything you want to take into the car, and that's all!
Mother: Now we must decide on where to stay during our journey.
Father: There are plenty of opportunities: we may take a tent or stay in a hotel, or rent a room or a cottage.
Alexei: Living in a tent is a bad idea. What if it rains? And, besides, it will occupy too much room in the car if we take it.
Mother: All right, dear. We will rent a room or stay in a hotel, then.
Father: Now we'd better take a map and choose the best route for our journey.

People started travelling in the ancient times. The first travellers were pilgrims, nomads and explorers. Travelling was really dangerous in those days, but there were always brave and daring people who went on discovering new lands, in search of wealth and fame.
Nowadays things have changed significantly. Hundreds of companies are willing to help you if you are planning to go somewhere. You are free to choose where to go: you may want to spend a vacation in the mountains or by the sea, and a plane will take you to the place of your choice in a matter of hours. A lot of people will cater to the needs of the travellers in hotels and holiday centres all over the world. Visitors are amused and taken care of in any possible way. Holidaymaking has become one of the most profitable industries, and the budget of many countries, such as Turkey, Egypt and Greece depends on tourism a lot. Travelling has become easier — and maybe less exciting.

Doctor: Don't worry; there is nothing really serious. You have got flu. It is spring now, and many people suffer from flu. But you shouldn't treat your disease lightly. It often leads to complications, if a patient doesn't follow the doctor's advice.
Vlad: What am 1 to do, doctor?
Doctor: Here is the recipe, take these pills three times a day. Gargle your throat with this mixture every two hours. Don't go to the chemist's yourself. Ask your relatives to go and fetch the medicine for you. Drink hot tea or milk. And stay in bed for at least three days. Do you need a sick leave?
Vlad: Yes, I do.
Doctor: Then I'll give you a leave for three days, and then you will come to see me again.
Vlad: Thank you very much, doctor. Goodbye.
Having left the polyclinic, Vlad went straight home. He asked Alexei to go to the chemist's for the medicine and went to bed. He followed the doctor's advice and did everything he had prescribed. His friends called him and asked how he felt. They wanted to come and see him, but Viad's mother didn't allow them to. So they sent him some to the end of the third day Vlad stopped sneezing and coughing and his temperature was normal again. He was glad that he recovered.

В понедельник Влад плохо себя почувствовал. У него болело горло, был насморк и кашель, и после первой пары учитель посоветовал ему посетить врача, потому что у него были все симптомы гриппа, а это очень заразная болезнь. Поэтому Влад ушел из колледжа и пошел в поликлинику. Перед кабинетом врача стояло несколько человек в очереди, но меньше, чем через полчаса подошла очередь Влада, и он вошел в кабинет.
Влад: Доброе утро. Можно войти?
Доктор: Да, пожалуйста. Что с Вами случилось?
Влад: Я думаю, доктор, что слегка простудился. У меня болит горло и насморк.
Доктор: Вы кашляете?
Влад: Да, время от времени.
Доктор: Вы измеряли температуру?
Влад: Фактически нет, доктор.
Д. .Тогда садитесь. Вот термометр. Ну, молодой человек, у Вас довольно высокая температура 38,4. Дайте посмотреть Ваше горло. Разденьтесь, пожалуйста, по пояс. Я должен Вас послушать. Хорошо. Можете одеваться.
Влад: Доктор, у меня что-то серьезное?
Доктор: Не волнуйтесь, ничего страшного. У Вас грипп. Сейчас весна, и многие люди болеют гриппом. Но Вы не должны к этому относится спустя рукава, если пациент не следует советам врача, это часто приводит к осложнениям.
Влад: Доктор, что я должен делать?
Доктор: Вот рецепт, принимайте эти таблетки 3 раза в день. Поласкайте горло этой микстурой каждые 2 часа. Сами в аптеку не ходите, попросите Ваших родственников сходить и купить Вам лекарство. Пейте горячий чай или молоко и, по крайней мере, 3 дня соблюдайте постельный режим. Вам нужен больничный лист?
Влад: Да.
Доктор: Тогда я дам Вам больничный на 3 дня, а потом Вы снова ко мне придете.
Влад: Спасибо большое, доктор. До свидания.
Уйдя из поликлиники, Влад отправился прямо домой. Он попросил Алексея сходить в аптеку за лекарством и лег в постель. Он следовал советам врача и делал все, что ему прописали. Друзья ему звонили и спрашивали, как он себя чувствует. Они хотели его навестить, но мама Влада не позволила. Поэтому они прислали ему несколько книг почитать. В конце 3 дня Влад уже не чихал и не кашлял, и температура у него снова была нормальная. Он был рад, что выздоровел.
