Alaska is America’s largest state, but very few people live there. The capital of Alaska is Juneau.

The currents of the Pacific warm Alaska, and the Arctic chills it. Alaska lies between 71 degrees and 56 degrees north latitude, stretching southward from the Arctic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. This immense tongue of land is sharply divided into three distinct regions. In the north, Arctic Alaska reaches from the Arctic Ocean to the rough mountains of Brooks Range. Central Alaska lies between Brooks Range and Alaska Range. From the western face of the Alaska Range, another block of territory slopes down toward the Bering Sea and Russia.

The stream pressure in the Drake Strait was measured in 1969. It was 270 mln cubic metres a second.

Arctic Alaska has been the home of the Eskimos for countless centuries. It is believed that the Eskimos moved there from Mongolia or Siberia. A short route for their passage would have been the Bering Strait, which is named for Vitus Bering, the sea captain who discovered Alaska on his voyage to Russia in 1741.

After fishing Alaska’s chief industry is lumber and paper production. There are also large deposits of coal, copper, gold, and other important minerals.

The twenty islands of Hawaii lie upon the Pacific, from southeast to northwest. They belong to the hot climate, but the climate is rather less hot because of the ocean currents that pass their shores, and because of the winds that blow across the land from the northeast. On the larger islands, volcanic mountains from which lava flows, rise up out of the sea. Along the gently sloping land areas to the southeast, there are beaches of yellow, white and black sands.

Hot-climate plants, sandy desert, waterfalls and craters, caves and beaches make the park a tourist attraction.

The Great Salt Lake is in the northwest of the state of Utah, close to Salt Lake City, the capital. It is so salty that the human body cannot sink in it. Its present area is much smaller than ancient lake of which it is a remnant.

The decrease in size is due partly to evaporation, partly to diversion for irrigation of some of the streams which fill it. The saltness of the lake has increased as its area has diminished, and today it is about six times as salty as the ocean.

Minerals

Minerals are the basic naturally occurring inorganic homogeneous units having definite physical and chemical properties which are combined in various ways and under different conditions to form rocks.

Most minerals consist of elements combined as chemical compounds although a few may occur as native elements — for example, gold, silver, copper, and carbon (diamond and graphite).

Eight elements make up about 98% of the earth’s crust. Oxygen is the most abundant and seven other elements unite with oxygen to make up many of the common minerals. The most fundamental combination of these elements is their union with oxygen to form oxides. When silicon unites with oxygen, silicon dioxide is formed, which unites with water and forms acids. The six other elements unite with oxygen and water to form bases. The acids and bases combine to form silicates, which are the most abundant compounds in the earth’s crust.

Minerals and Their Properties

Minerals are naturally occurring substances with a characteristic atomic structure and characteristic chemical and physical properties. Some minerals have a fixed chemical composition; others vary within certain limits. It is their atomic structure that distinguishes minerals from one another.

Some minerals consist of a single element, but most minerals are composed of two or more elements. A diamond, for instance, consists only of carbon atoms, but quartz is a compound of silica and oxygen. Of the 105 elements presently known, nine make up more than 99 percent of the minerals and rocks.

The most striking feature of minerals is their crystal form, and this is a reflection of their atomic structure. The simplest example of this is rock salt, or halite (NaCl, sodium chloride), in which the positive ions (charged atoms) of sodium are linked with negatively charged chlorine ions by their unlike electrical charges. We can imagine these ions as spheres, with the spheres of sodium having about half the radius of the chlorine ions (.98 A as against 1.8 A; A is an Angstrom Unit, which is equivalent to one hundred millionth of a centimeter, written numerically as ~0. cm). The unit is named for Anders Angstrom, a Swedish physicist.
