Coal
Coal is the fuel which made the industrial revolution possible. About a billion and a half tons are still mined annually (500 million tons in the United States). Coal is an organic sedimentary rock consisting of the altered remains of plants. It is formed by a slow series of changes marked by a loss of water and volatile substances and a corresponding increase in the amount of “fixed carbon.” Coal is classified by the relative amount of these three groups of materials. Peat, which contains about 80 per cent moisture, is not considered a form of coal.
Lignite, the lowest rank or kind of coal, has a heating value of 7 400 British Thermal Units (B. T.U.). It is brown in color and breaks down into powdered or flaky fragments when stored. It burns with a smoky flame. Bituminous or soft coals are black coals which often have a cubic fracture and a dull luster. They yield from 9 700 toB. T.U. and total 90 per cent of the coal mined. The higher grades of bituminous coal store well and burn with an almost smokeless flame. Anthracite or hard coal is hard and durable. It stores well and burns with a very short smokeless flame. Anthracite has a black shiny luster — sometimes iridescent.

Natural Gas
Natural gas is found with petroleum, though some oil fields have very little gas and some gas fields yield no commercial oil. Chemically, natural gas is a mixture of the lighter chemicals found in petroleum — mainly methane with butane, propane, and other gases. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and even helium may be present also.
Production of natural gas in the United States averages about nine trillion cubic feet annually. Reserves are enormous. Over 75 per cent of natural gas goes into industrial uses. Some is liquefied as bottled gas, and natural gasoline is an important by-product. From 11/2 to 2 gallons of gasoline may be obtained from 1000 cubic feet of natural gas. Natural gas gasoline is produced at the rate of over 5 billion gallons a year, accounting for nearly half of all U. S. pression plants at the wellheads extract the gasoline from the “wet” gas. Over a quarter of a million miles of pipelines, some more than a thousand miles long, carry natural gas and petroleum from wells to industrial centers and cities.
In former times natural gas pressure on a pool of oil was frequently allowed to cause a “gusher.” When this happened, a jet of oil was shot several hundred feet into the air and wasted.

The Size and Shape of the Earth
The size and the shape of the earth were not always calculated accurately. Most ancient peoples thought the earth was flat, but there are many simple proofs that the earth is a sphere. For instance, as a ship approaches from over the horizon, masts or funnels are visible. As the ship comes closer, more of its lower parts come into view. Final proof, of course, was provided by circumnavigating the globe and by photographs taken from spacecraft.
The Greek geographer and astronomer Eratosthenes was probably the first (about 225 B. C.) to measure successfully the circumference of the earth. The basis for his calculations was the measurement of the elevation of the sun from two different points on the globe. Two simultaneous observations were made, one from Alexandria, Egypt (Point B), and the other from a site on the Nile near the present Aswan Dam (Point A). At the latter point, a good vertical sighting could be made, as the sun was known to shine directly down a well at noon on the longest day (June 23) of the year.
Eratosthenes reasoned that if the earth were round, the noonday sun could not appear in the same position in the sky as seen by two widely separated observers. He compared the angular displacement of the sun (Y) with the distance between the two ground sites, A and B.

Life. What Is It?
There is no special definition of the conception for the word “life”. However it is possible to name and describe those signs of organic matter that differ it from inorganic.
Everybody knows that a butterfly that is flying from one flower to another, all plants, animals and, at least, a man – are alive creatures and minerals, rocks and stones are dead. But why can we identify alive and dead?
Several theories were suggested to answer the question.
One of them is so called “The Mechanic Theory of Life”. Another theory is called “The Theory of Dialectic Materialism”. According to it Life – is the special form of matter movement that appears as the new quality on the definite stage of historical development.
Any alive object has several characteristics. The structure of organic substances has the same chemical elements as the structure of inorganic substances but the correlation of them is different. The main elements are hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, and phosphorous. Besides, there are such important elements as: sodium, magnesium, chlorine, iron, calcium, potassium and some others. More than that, all organic creatures also have such characteristics as: cell structure, metabolism, self-regulation, mental functions, hereditary, changeability, reproduction and individual development.
