Tourist: Wasn't Cracow the capital of Poland?

Guide: That's correct. Although Warsaw became the capital at the begin­ning of the seventeenth century, royal coronations continued to take place in Cracow and it remained a centre of historical and cultural importance.

Tourist: Wasn't destroyed in the wars?

Guide: Well, not exactly. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the castle suffered from political conflicts, but an intensive restoration programme in the twentieth century saved the castle and cathedral.

Speaker 1.

In America we have the first name, the middle name and the surname. The surname is exactly the same as the family name. The first name is the same as the given name. Here's an example for you. Robert is the given name of my son. His middle name is Pyke. His family name is Stone. So his full name is Robert Pyke Stone. Women take the family names of their husbands. Sometimes married women often use their maiden names together with their husbands' names. Some people have a special first name. We call this a «nick­name». Sometimes this nickname is a short form of the given name.

Speaker 2.

In America there are a lot of holidays in autumn. For example, they are Halloween and Thanksgiving. Halloween is on the 31st of October. This is the day of fun. At night, children pretend to be witches and ghosts. They make Jack-o'-lanterns out of pumpkin and put on costumes and masks. Then they go from house to house, ring the door-bells, look into the windows, and play pranks on everyone. Thanksgiving comes the last Thursday in November. The whole nation gives thanks for good harvest and the generous gifts of Nature. On that day we generally have our biggest feast of the year.

Speaker 3.

I started to feel bad yesterday. I had a headache and my throat was sore. I stayed in bed all day. I had a temperature of one hundred and three (Fahren­heit). My whole body ached. My wife fixed hot lemonade but that didn't help me much. She wanted to give me some aspirin tablets but there weren't any in the house. The doctor said that from my symptoms it was like a case of the «flu». He gave me some medicine and asked me to stay at home for a week and get a complete rest.

Speaker 4.

This summer we decided to go to the seashore by train. Luckily I got reser­vations for two lower berths. I called the Pullman Office last week. No reserva­tions were available, they told me. So I asked them to save us the first cancel­lation. Yesterday, they notified me of two. I went over to their office and picked them up right away. I didn't tell my wife before. I wanted to surprise her. We got round-trip tickets. This time we go Pullman both ways.

Speaker 5.

Christmas comes on the 25th of December. It's our last holiday of the year and, perhaps, the most popular one. It is believed that Santa Claus comes to see little children on this day. He puts gifts into their stockings and under the Christmas tree. We always like being with our large ones on Christmas Day. We laugh and feast and give presents to each other. To my mind Christmas is the best holiday of the year.
