A leader like other individuals also –1– in a number of groups. Thus, the leader may not only lead groups, but also may be a non-leading member of other groups.

One of the principal tasks of a leader is to arrange people and jobs for the accomplishment of goals and objectives. Leadership involves influencing the –2– of others. It is through the use of influence that a leader attempts to coordinate and control his subordinates, define the structure of an organization and clarify goals and norms of behavior. What kind of leader is likely to be most –5– ? This question has drawn the attention of a large number of behavioral researchers and theorists. A long time ago, a Chinese sage named Lao-tsu said about leaders, "As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. Communication: What Does it Mean?

Ms. D. Rogers is the Senior Personnel manager at the "Home Depot", Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This company is the largest home hardware store chain in the United States. Ms. D. Rogers is –1– to more than 25,000 employees in 100 locations throughout the USA. To Deedy Rogers, communication means more than simply sending relevant information from corporate headquarters in Atlanta to retail stores all over the country. To D. Roger, communication means motivating people, breaking down boundaries, and directing the flow of information and ideas that –2– and to act more effectively.

An organization is defined as a group of people working together to achieve a common goal, and communication is –3–. Walk through the halls of a typical modern organization, and what do you see? Managers reading reports, drafting electronic memos on their computers, exchanging e-mail messages, conducting Internet conferences and interviews, talking on the telephone, holding business lunches, making presentations, etc. In short, you see people communicating.

Communication, the way Roger sees it, is lifeblood of modern business. How well a communication system works determines how easily ideas move through the company and how readily ideas are shared. It is especially important, says Rogers, that employees understand that ideas flow both ways --from the top down and from down to the top.

There are many ways of communication. Unfortunately, –4– , the face-to-face meeting, – is not very often used.

Communication skills are ranked number one in importance in preparing chief executive officers (COE) for business leadership. –5– competent communicators are more likely to receive promotions than those with less developed communication skills.

b) encourage people to think in new ways

c) a vital part of that process.

d) the most effective form of communication

Задание 11. Определите, какие утверждения 1-5, приведенные после текста, соответствуют содержанию текста (а), не соответствуют содержанию текста (b), о чем в данном тексте не сказано (c).

The Components of Communication

Communication means the process of sending and receiving messages -sometimes through spoken or written words and sometimes through such nonverbal means as facial expressions, gestures and voice qualities. Verbal messages are made up of words and include oral and written communications.

The ability to communicate by using words separates human beings from most of the animal kingdom. Your verbal ability also enables you to learn from the past - to benefit from the experience of others. A nonverbal message is any message that is not written or spoken. The nonverbal message may accompany a verbal message (smiling as you greet a colleague), or it may occur alone (selecting the back seat when entering the conference room for a staff meeting). Nonverbal messages are typically more spontaneous than verbal messages, but it does not mean that they are any less important. One study has shown that only 7 per cent of the meaning communicated by most messages comes from the verbal portion, with the remaining 93 per cent being conveyed nonverbally.

Facial expressions, gestures, body stance (posture, placement of arms and legs, distribution of weight), as well as physical appearance, voice qualities, touch and observation of time and space rules of behavior are very important in terms of sending and receiving information.

Considering the complex nature of the communication, one should not be surprised that our messages are not always received exactly as we intended. As a matter of fact, sometimes our messages are not received at all. Other times, they are received incompletely or inaccurately, because there are numerous barriers to effective communication.

Verbal barriers are related to what you say or write: inadequate knowledge or vocabulary, differences in interpretation, inappropriate use of expressions, ambiguity, etc. Nonverbal barriers include inappropriate or conflicting signals, differences in perception, inappropriate emotions. There are also organizational barriers to communication: breaking the rules of corporate culture - what should and should not be done in an organization.

1.  Verbal messages may be oral or written.

2.  People, unlike animals, exchange only verbal messages.

3.  Facial expressions and voice qualities are more important than any other non-verbal messages.

4.  Our messages are sometimes received incompletely.

5.  Besides verbal, non-verbal and organizational barriers, there are psychological types of barriers to efficient communication.
