НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

I had only been at university for a few hours when the enormity of it finally dawned on me: I was now independent. Having lived at home with my parents all life up until that day, I had often dreamed of the freedom that living …(1)… yourself gives you. There’s no one to tell you when to go to bed, when to get up, what to do, what not to do. Now, though I felt responsibility weighing down on me. True, there was no one giving me rules …(2)…, but there was also no one to …(3)… on but myself. If I didn’t remember to go to the supermarket, there wouldn’t be any food in the flat. If I didn’t budget correctly, there wouldn’t be Mum or Dad nearby to lend me some money. If I didn’t pay the bills …(4)…, the electricity or water would be cut off. It was a frightening feeling, and I prayed I would be able to deal with adult life in a …(5)… enough way.

Over the next days and weeks, I began to realise how much I still had to learn. How could I have …(6)… to the age of eighteen without ever having ironed my own shirt? Was that …(7)… on my part (‘Mum, can you iron a shirt for me?’), or had my parents and teachers failed to provide me with the skills I now needed? Whichever it was, I quickly had to learn. And learn I did – partly through trial and error, and partly …(8)… to the help of the new friends I was making. Many of them were in a similar situation, but we each had different skills to share. I could show them how to cook a tasty spaghetti Bolognese – a …(9)… every student should be able to prepare – and they could teach me how to light a gas own or defrost a fridge. When I went home for Christmas, I sensed that my parents were a little surprised that I had …(10)… to survive so well. I didn’t admit it, but I felt extremely proud of all I’d accomplished so far.

Part 4. WRITING

Choose either letter and write one answer expressing your personal viewpoint on the issue. Try to put it into 200-250 words.

1. Dear Cosmo,

At the age of fifteen, and to the horror of my parents, I had a heart tattooed on my shoulder. I’d always liked the idea of having a tattoo. I thought they looked good and some of my friends had them. I felt a bit scared about how much it would hurt, and I knew that my parents would hate the idea, but one day I got this done. It seemed like a really good idea at the time. My parents were completely horrified, of course. I remember my dad saying he’d never seen a girl with a tattoo, and he hoped he never would again, but they sort of accepted it in the end. Now five years later, a lot has changed in my life, but the tattoo is still there, and I wish I’d thought more about it. I have had an office job that doesn’t imply any body art, and, which is worse, my boyfriend isn’t really keen on it. He is kind of worried about how it would look like in another ten years. So I suppose I am stuck with it now, considering the fact that it’s incredibly painful and expensive to get rid of it. What shall I do? Shall I get rid of it? Or shall I leave everything as it is?

Silvie, 20

2. Hello!

I haven’t been writing to you for a while, sorry. I’ve been finishing school, you know. Now I’ve had my Certificate, got a job in the Sales Department, and seem to be having a problem. You know I hated languages at school. I just wasn’t interested in learning. I was always at the bottom of the class when it came to exams! Maybe it wasn’t her fault, but I really didn’t get on with my teacher of Spanish. She seemed to think I was a stupid young girl because I didn’t know a past form from a present form (I still don’t, actually). And even if I did learn Spanish, there were no Spanish-speaking people in town, so who would I ever speak Spanish to? Things have started to change, though. The Sales Department work with Spanish partners, and I have to speak to them on the phone every day, which isn’t easy. Manager says I won’t be able to keep the job if I go on like this. What shall I do? Shall I give up this well-paid job and look for something else or shall I study? If study, shall I do this on my own or take some classes or private lessons? What would you do?

Waiting for your reply,

Jennifer.
