British and American Money

ENGLISH BANKNOTES AND COINS

English banknotes are issued by the Bank of England. Coins are also minted by this state bank. Banknotes and coins of different denominations are in circulation.

On the face of English banknotes one can read the denomination given both in figures and in words.

The inscription on the face of the banknote reads: I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of … . And then there are two signatures. The first signature is that of the person authorized by the Government and the Bank of England. The second signature is that of the Chief Cashier.

The backs of English banknotes, like many other banknotes, feature portraits of different famous people. The one-pound note, for example, features Isaac Newton, a well-known English scientist. The back of the twenty-pound note portrays William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright.

AMERICAN MONEY

The dollars are issued by the Federal Reserve System, which was established by Congress in 1913.

On the face of an American dollar there is certain information:

1) (…) dollars;

2) Federal Reserve Note;

3) the United States of America;

4) this note is legal tender for all debts public and private;

5) Washington D. C.;

6) Treasurer of the United States;

7) Secretary of the Treasury.

On the face of an American dollar one can also see the portraits of the famous people, e. g. George Washington (the first President), Benjamin Franklin (a writer, diplomat and scientist).

On the back of the banknotes various famous buildings are featured, for example, US Capitol, which houses the Senate and the House of Representatives.

All banknotes bear the words: In God we trust.

Work: Conditions and Pay.

Peter:

Hi, Jane! How are you?

Jane:

Hello, Peter. Fine. And you?

Peter:

Great, thanks. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about your job.

Jane:

Why?

Peter:

Well, I’m going to apply for a job in the same company where you work and first I’d like to ask you about the conditions there.

Jane:

What position are you applying for?

Peter:

I was thinking about being a manager, like you.

Jane:

To become a manager, you will have to go on some training courses. Every new employee has to go through this in our company.

Peter:

Yes, I’m aware of that. But tell me about the duties of a manager there.

Jane:

Well, I’m in charge of all deliveries in our company. I also have to deal with any complaints.

Peter:

What does that involve?

Jane:

I often attend meetings, I meet clients and advise them.

Peter:

Is it difficult to get promotion in your company?

Jane:

If you are good and work well, you will get your first pay rise after a year and probably after two years you will be promoted.

Peter:

What about the salary? Is your job well paid?

Jane:

I earn $60,000 a year, and I’m satisfied at the moment.

Peter:

How much holiday do you get?

Jane:

One month a year. Of course, it is possible to take sick leave and you still receive your full salary.

Peter:

That’s good. But do you often work overtime?

Jane:

Sometimes. Of course, they pay you double-time. But usually it is nine-to-five work. But Peter, why do you want to quit your company? You’ve been working there for five years.

Peter:

There is a new boss who doesn’t like me. I think he will fire me eventually and I don’t want to wait for that. I’d prefer to find a new job, resign and not be sacked.

Jane:

I understand. They are looking for new workers in my company so I’m sure they will employ you there.
