When I come up to the mirror, I always expect to see an athletic figure with a thoughtful forehead, steel-grey eyes, square chin, broad shoulders and bulky muscles, like those of Jean Claude van Damm’s. And what do I really see? Someone younger my real age, long-faced, stooping and bony. My friends say, I am tall and slim, but I am sure they just flatter (льстят) me. The worst thing is the blonde silky curly hair. I’d prefer being bald!

A Student’s Working Day

I am a student at the Technical Academy. My classes begin at nine o’clock. So on weekdays I have to (приходится) get up at half past seven. My alarm clock usually wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the radio, do my morning exercises, take a shower and brush my teeth. After that I get dressed and comb my hair. Then I have breakfast. I love to listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating.

I leave the house at ten minutes past eight and walk to the nearest bus stop. I live rather far from the Academy and it usually takes me about a quarter of an hour to get there by bus, Sometimes when the weather is fine and I have plenty of time I walk to the Academy.

As a rule, we have three or four classes a day. We have lectures in different subjects. Usually I don’t miss my classes because I want to pass my examinations successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and the classes are boring.

At twelve o’clock we have a big interval for lunch. That’s my favorite time. That is the time to share the latest news with my friends. I prefer not to go to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small café not too far from the Academy. At one o’clock we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we also have several ten-minute intervals.

From time to time I have to stay at the Academy till late because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on weekdays. So, by the end of the week I get very tired.

I come home at about 7 o’clock in the evening. My parents are already at home. We have supper together. After supper we wash the dishes, drink coffee or tea and watch TV. I prefer old comedies and thrillers or travelogues. Sometimes I go for a walk in the park or call on my friends.

At about eleven at night I go to bed. I like to read something before going to bed or to listen to some music. Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading.

The University

1. Foundation. The Branch Department of Altai State University in Rubtsovsk was opened in 1996. The aim was to satisfy the need of the city for qualified specialists and help young people get specialized education not leaving their home town. The University welcomes applicants from nearby districts and regions. Tuition (обучение) is paid.

2. Management. The Board plans and manages the life of the University and College. The Director heads the Board. A few Deputy Directors are responsible for activities: academic, social, financial, enrollment and other ones.

Lecturers (teachers) deliver lectures and conduct seminars. Besides, the teaching staff does research work and helps the students to progress in sciences as well – many students take part in scientific conferences with their reports.

3. Subjects. Most students at the University are trained full-time. In the first year, students study general subjects such as History of Motherland, Mathematics, Foreign Language, Russian Language; they get good physical training, communication and computer skills. Later, they have classes in Social Science, Politics, Elementary Philosophy.

Gradually, general subjects are replaced by special ones. For example, the academic program for senior students at the Economy department includes Finance and Credit, Accounting, Marketing, Management, etc.

4. Enrollment and Exams. To enter the University, the aspirants take entrance tests. The students must attend classes, be punctual and show good results. The knowledge is checked by examinations and pass-fail tests. The academic year has two terms. The exams are taken at the end of each term: in December and in June. The students may get excellent, good, satisfactory marks or credit grades. Some students miss lectures and lag behind the group. This may lead to unsatisfactory marks or no credit grades. Such students may fail at examinations and be expelled from the University.

The total course of study at the University is 5 years. After the final exams, the graduates get their diplomas and become certified specialists. Some of the graduates get second higher education.
