ACT 1
Scene 1:
Quince: Is all our company here?
Bottom: You were best to call them generally, man by man, according to the script.
Quince: (Holding a scroll) Here is the scroll of every man’s name, which is thought fit, through all Athens to play in our interlude before the Duke and Duchess, on his wedding day at night.
Bottom: First, good Peter Quince, say what the play treats on, then read the names of the actors, and so grow to a point.
Quince: Marry! The play is ours.
Bottom: A very good piece of work, I assure you, and a merry. Now, good Peter Quince, call forth your actors by the scroll. Masters, spread yourselves.
Quince: Answer as I call you.
Scene 2: (Athens. The Palace of Theseus)
Enter Theseus, Hippolyta
Theseus: It is only 4 days until our wedding, my Hippolyta. But each day goes so slowly.
Hippolyta: Those 4 days will quickly turn into nights. And we will quickly dream away those nights. And then it will be time for our wedding.
Enter Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius.
Egeus: Good day, my lord. I hope you are well!
Theseus: Thanks, good Egeus: what’s the news with you?
Egeus: I am very angry with my daughter Hermia. Step forward, Demetrius. My noble lord, this man has my consent to marry her. Step forward, Lysander. And, my lord, this man has made my daughter love him. She says she will marry no one except him.
Theseus: What do you say, Hermia? Think of your position carefully. To you, your father should be as a GOD, take his advice… Demetrius is a good man, he deserves your love.
Hermia: So does Lysander.
Theseus: Perhaps he does, but he is not your father’s choice. Either to die, or promise to give up forever the society of men. If you won’t obey your father, you must become a nun, or die.
Exit Stay Lysander and Hermia.
Lysander: Listen to me, Hermia. I have a very rich aunt who lives away from Athens, and she thinks of me as her only son. There, I can marry you. If you love me then, leave your father’s house tomorrow night; and, in the wood, where I met you with Helena, I will wait for you. Meet me there and we will run away together.
Hermia: I swear to you I will meet you tomorrow!
Lysander: Keep your promise! Look, here comes Helena.
Enter Helena.
Hermia: Hello, fair Helena! Where are you going?
Helena: Are you calling ME fair? Demetrius loves YOUR fair, you type of beauty! O, teach me how you look, and how you control the Demetrius’ heart!
Hermia: I’ m not friendly or kind to him. The more I hate him, the more he loves me!
Helena: The more I love him, the more he hates me!
Hermia: I never wanted him to love me!
Helena: I know. I don’t blame you.
Hermia: Don’t worry, he no more shall see my face. Lysander and I will fly this place. Helena, Good bye
Exit Hermia
Exit Lysander
Helena: I will go tell Demetrius of Hermia’s flight, then he will follow her tomorrow night to the wood. Demetrius may not love me, but if I tell him about Hermia and Lysander, he will be grateful to me. If I cannot have his love, at least I can have his thanks.
Exit Helena
ACT II
Scene 1: (A wood near Athens)
Enter a Fairy at one door, and Puck at another.
Puck: Hello, Fairy! Where are you going?
Fairy: Over hill, over dale,
Through bush, through grass,
Over park, over pale,
Through flood, through fire,
I do wander everywhere, quicker than the Moon sphere;
You can see spots on their yellow coats.
Those are jewels, given to them, by the fairies,
and you can recognize them
by those little brown spots.
Puck: There is a festivity here tonight, and the King will make merry here.
Fairy: Wait a minute. Aren’t you Robin Goodfellow? Aren’t you he who likes playing tricks on people? Aren’t you the merry little fellow full of jokes and tricks?
Puck: You are right. I’m Robin Goodfellow I am that funny traveller of the night. I amuse Oberon and make him smile... Sometimes, when I see someone who talks too much, I hide in their drink. Then when they pick up their glass, I jump up and pour the drink all over them. Or when I see a wise old woman telling stories, I sometimes pretend to be a chair. When she tries to sit down, I jump away, and she falls on the floor. Then everyone laughs and says it is the funniest thing they have ever seen!
Oberon: My dear Puck, come here! I once showed you a special little purple flower. We will put the juice of this flower on sleeper’s eyes, and, when he wakes, he will love the first thing he sees, even if it’s a clown, a monkey or a wild animal. Puck: I’ll fly off at once and search for the little purple flower.
Exit Puck.
Oberon: But who comes here? I am invisible, and I will listen to their conversation.
Enter Demetrius, Helena following him.
Demetrius: I don’t love you, then don’t follow me! Where is Lysander and Hermia? You told me they would run away to this wood. Go away, and don’t follow me any more!
Helena: You attract me, you heart is like iron! It is a cold, hard, magnet and it pulls my heart towards it. Stop pulling me with your heart, and I will stop following you.
Demetrius Do I say nice things to you? Do I call you beautiful? I have told you already that I do not love you! I am sick when I look on you. I’ll run from you and hide in the wood!
Helena: You harm me everywhere I go. Love is not fair for women. We cannot fight for love like men. We have to be chased, we cannot chase.
Exit Demetrius.
Exit Helena.
Enter Puck.
Oberon: Don’t worry, young Helena. Before that young man leaves this wood, I sall turn everything around. I shall make sure that you are running away from him, and that he is looking for your love. Hello, Puck, do you have the flower with you?
Puck: Here it is.
Oberon: Give it to me.
A sweet Athenian lady is in love
With a disdainful youth: anoint his eyes,
But do it when the next thing he espies,
May be the Lady. Thou shalt know the man,
By the Athenian clothes he wears on.
You shall know the man by the Athenian clothes he has on. Be careful, when he wakes up, I want him to love her more than she loves him. When you finish, come to meet me here.
Puck: My lord, your servant shall do so.
Exit (both)
Scene 2: (Another part of the wood)
Enter Lysander, Hermia.
Lysander: My love, I have forgotten our way. Let’s rest here, if you want.
Hermia: Yes, Lysander. Find a bed for yourself, for I upon this bank will rest my head.
Lysander: This shall serve as pillow for us both.
They sleep
Enter puck.
Puck: Through the forest I have gone
But Athenian found I none.
On whose eyes I might approve
This flower’s power in stirring love?
Night and silence! who is here?
Looks of Athens he must wear,
This is he, my master said,
Despised the Athenian girl.
And here, the girl, sleeping sound
On the cold and dirty ground.
Simple soul! She should not lie
near this man who lacks of love.
Young man! Upon your eyes I throw,
` All the power this charm does owe
Wake up, and in love you’ll be
With the first person you will see.
So awake when I’m gone,
For I must now, go to Oberon.
Exit.
Enter Demetrius, Helena running.
Helena: Stay, otherwise you’ll kill me, sweet Demetrius. Will you in the dark leave me? Don’t do so!
Demetrius: Stay on your own! I alone will go
Exit.
Helena: I am out of breath in this chase!
the more I pray, the less I please Demetrius.
Happy is Hermia, wherever she lies,
for she has blessed and attractive eyes.
How came her eyes so bright? Not with salt tears.
If so, my eyes are more washed than hers.
No, No, I am as ugly as a bear,
for beasts that meet me run away for fear.
That’s why Demetrius flies my presence!
Who is here? Lysander! on the ground?
Dead or asleep? I see no blood, no wound.
Lysander, If you’re alive, good sir, wake up!
Lysander: (waking up) Helena, my love! I’ll run through fire for you!
Beautiful Helena, I love you!! Where is Demetrius? I want to kill him!
Helena: Do not say so, Lysander; do not say so,
Even though he loves your Hermia, Hermia still loves you; then, be happy!
Lysander: Happy with Hermia? No!! I regret every minute I spent with her. Not Hermia, but Helena I love!!
Helena: Are you making fun of me? Isn’t it enough, young man, that I never deserved a sweet look from Demetrius eyes? Should a lady who is refused by one man, be abused by another one!!?
Exit.
Lysander, Hermia. I will try with all my powers to honor Helena.
Exit.
Hermia: ( waking ) Help me, Lysander! Oh! what a dream I had!
Lysander, look how scared I am! Lysander! Lord! What, out of hearing? gone? no sound, no word? Where are you? Speak if you hear me! Speak if you love me!! No? then you’re not here! Either dead or I’ll find you immediately!
Exit.
Act III
Scene 1: (Another part of the wood)
Enter Oberon
Enter Puck
Her comes my messenger. Hello, Puck! what’s going on tonight in this wood?
Oberon: This is better than I could think... But, have you put on the Athenian’s eyes the love juice as I told you to do?
