Seminar 1: Quest for the origins of Rus’. Emergence of Rus: the legends and their roles in historical memory.

You will have a practical task for this seminar which should be made in advance. So please start with reading “Readings” and then turn to the “Sources”. The excerpts from Lomonosov and Karamzin are not long but require a good command of Russian. I would advise you to join into teams with Russian native-speakers who will certainly help. When reading the sources you should find the principal differences between Lomonosov’s and Karamzin’s interpretations of the “origin legend”. You should also think about the reasons for such differences and your “Readings” should be helpful here. But this is not all. After doing this exercise you should turn to Internet and search for at least one modern case where the “origin legend” becomes a principal argument in debate or background for action. We’ll discuss these cases along with your reflections upon Karamzin and Lomonosov in class.
