1. The USA is a country of great differences. At the same time it has surprising similarities. The differences are partly a result of the geography. The United States are a country of great contrasts in landscape, climate and even the way of living because the nation occupies nearly half of a continent.
2. There can be found high mountains and the flattest of prairies, tropical heat and arctic cold, fertile valleys and desert areas. All sorts of products are raised, and there are industries of every kind.
3. Each region of the United States has characteristics of its own. There are large and modern cities, but a great proportion of the country consists of open land with farm-houses and small towns. In spite of this, however, and in spite of the size of the country, there are striking uniformities in the American scene.
4. The capital of the USA is the city of Washington called after the first President of the United States, General George Washington. It is like no other city of the USA. The flag of the USA, the "stars and stripes", has 50 stars on a blue background. Each of these stars represents one of the fifty states. But the city of Washington is not in any of those states. Washington is situated in the District of Columbia which is outside the jurisdiction of any state and subject only to the control of the Federal Congress.

2. Anthony Panizzi designed the plans for the construction of the famous circular Reading Room at the British Museum; and it occupies the site of the former interior courtyard. The domed roof of the Reading Room is forty-seven metres in diameter.
3. The first thing which strikes a visitor on entering the Reading Room is its unusual shape. It is a perfect circle. The superintendent and his assistants sit in the centre of the room and they issue and collect books. The catalogues are kept in a slightly larger circular space behind them, and from this circumference of catalogues, long rows of reading desks radiate to the outer walls, like the spokes of a wheel.
4. The British Museum has an enormous range of galleries, but they no longer contain the objects relating to natural history which formed such an important part of the original bequest. These are now housed in another museum. The British Museum contains books and manuscripts: Greek, Roman, West Asiatic and British, as well as oriental antiquities. It has a department of ethnography. Ethnography is concerned with primitive peoples and their cultures in various stages of development as revealed by their tools, ritual objects and various crafts. This collection is so vast that only a tiny percentage is on show to the general public. Then there is a department of prints and drawings. There are also departments devoted to maps, coins and metals. Visitors interested in horology can see a fascinating array of clocks and watches. Those who are interested in philately can view a magnificent collection of postage stamps.

ВАРИАНТ 2
Прочтите и письменно переведите следующий текст.ALFRED LORD TENNYSON
In twentieth century Alfred Lord Tennyson (1was regarded as one of the great English poets and a powerful voice from the Victorian Age. Born the son of the parson, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, winning a medal for his poetry. However, his first published work, at the age of twenty one, attracted little attention from the public and it was not until twelve years later that a third volume, "Poems", was to bring him the recognition he deserved. Many of those poems from his youth are today among his most famous. On the death of William Wordsworth in 1850, Tennyson established himself sufficiently to take his place as Poet Laureate and it was during this period that some of his finest works were produced. The themes of his poetry range from medieval Romance to the forces of nature and through them constant attacks are made on the brutal hypocrisy of the Victorian era. There are those who would argue that this last area was more skilfully dealt with by the Victorian novelists rather than the poets, yet the stiength of Tennyson's writings has ensured his place among the great literary figures of history.

THE LIFE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
1. William Shakespeare was born at Stratford-on-Avon on April 23, 1564. He was educated at King Edward VI's Grammar School.
We have no certain information as to Shakespeare's life between 1584 and 1592.We know he was in London by 1592.During these years Shakespeare must have acquired the varied knowledge and experience of life shown in his plays.
2. The years when the theatres were closed on account of plague gave time for the poems, "Venus and Adonis" (1593) and "Lucrece"(1594).By March 1595 Shakespeare was a shareholder in the acting company of the Lord Chamberlain's Men who divided with the Admiral's Men the command of the London stage from about 1594 to 1603.For this company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, which later became the King's Men, Shakespeare seems to have written during the rest of the career. After 1599 most of his plays were performed at The Globe Theatre.
3. In 1596 Shakespeare obtained a grant of arms, in 1597 he bought a substantial house and garden at Stratford, but he is still found living in London in 1597, 1599 and 1610.
About 1610 Shakespeare retired to Stratford, and he wrote no more after 1613.He took no part in civic life, and died on April 23,1616.His burial took place at Stratford.
4. The First Folio Edition of his plays appeared in 1623.It contains thirty-six of the thirty-seven plays attributed to him. He sold fruit, sweets and cakes to the passengers. The hours he had to wait at Detroit before starting back home he spent in the library reading technical books.
2. Several years later, Edison learned telegraphy and he became a telegraph operator. He was soon one of the fastest operators in a large telegraph company in Boston. He wanted to improve the telegraph system and worked very hard at it. Night after night he read the "Book of Experiments" , by Michael Faraday, the inventor of the electric generator, in the hope that this would help him to solve his problems.
3. After a few months of work, he built a transmitter of a new kind. This was his first important invention. Edison was advised to go to New York where the opportunities were greater. He did so, but when he reached New York, he had no money left at all. He had to walk in the streets all night because he hadn't the price of a bed ; and in the morning nothing to buy breakfast with.
4. But soon, he opened a small workshop. At the age of twenty he had two inventions. One of Edison's greatest inventions was the gramophone, or the "phonograph",as he called it, which repeated his words. Another of Edison's invention was the electric lamps.
Edison believed that only work could bring success. He continued active work until only eighteen days before his death in 1931 , at the age of eighty-seven.
That evening, Americans all over the country turned off their electric lights for a few moments - the light which Edison had given them.

Working Life in Britain
People in Britain are not different from people in other countries. They work:
-because they need money for food, housing and clothes;
-because they want money to spend on leisure and luxuries;
-because they are bored without any regular work to do;
-because they enjoy the job they have.
Nowadays more and more Britons want to enjoy their work.
So they decide to work for themselves. They believe that their work will then be more satisfying. They run small businesses or become independent craftsmen. Some leave the city for the country where they hope to produce enough food to live on from a few acres of land.
It is sometimes said that British workers go on strike more often than workers in other countries. Of course the number of working days lost by strikes varies from year to year, but compared with other nations Britain's record is not the worst.
Do the British work hard when they are at work? Two different car manufacturers have different opinions:
Mersedes: "Our British mechanics work as well as those in Germany"
Ford: "Where they use identical machinery, workers in their Belgian and German plants will produce 1,5 to 2 times as many cars as workers in their British plants".
In 1973 the British government made new arrangements for helping people to find jobs. A nationwide organization was set up. It is called the Manpower Services Commission. It runs two agencies: the Employment Service Agency and the Training Service Agency.

Many islands have now become dependent on tourism as their main source of income. The principal industries were originally farming and fishing, with native islanders living off the land, but in contemporary society these activities have been largely ousted to cope with the growing demands of tourism. Attracted by their beaches, the heat and the relaxed atmosphere, islands have now become a popular destination for the sun - worshipping holiday - maker. Every aspectof island life has hence been affected by this influx of foreigners. Restaurants, bars, cafes, discos, hotels and souvenir shops depend on tourists, and in fact could not exist without them.
Obviously a lot of money can be earned from such a florishing industry. The six months of the peak season are a crucil time when the businessmen try to earn as much as they can. Apart from the commercial aspect, it can be said that islanders improve their ability to speak foreign languages. New buildings crop up to accomodate the ever-growing demands of tourists.

Kennel Clubs
Practically every city and town in Russia has a Kennel club or service dog-breeding
club as they known here. The Hunters' Society has sporting dog-breeding sections and lovers of fancy breeds ( декоративные породы) have dog-lovers' societies.
One of the main aims of the service dog-breeding clubs is to breed thoroughbred dogs (чистокровный). Their stock of purebred Alsatian (East European) sheepdogs is of world - wide fame. Experts the world over admire the Caucasian and Central Asian sheepdogs, which have been bred in these regions since ancient times. The husky, or Eskimo dog, has long ceased to be a dog of North alone. It has been exported to Germany, Hungary and Finland. The Russian borzoi (greyhound) ha become a pedigree breed ( nopoдa c родословной). Doberman pinchers that originated in our country have several times won top awards at international shows in Italy and Poland.
Dogs are trained at special centers-kennel clubs. The service dog-breeding clubs have training grounds for these purposes. The Moscow kennel Club, which hasmembers, has about 40 training grounds. At the annual dog shows the qualified judges appraise the animals' appearance, their performance, pedigrees and the quality of their young.
Every year thousands of young people take part in combined competitions with service dogs. The dog owners must be physically fit and trained, because they have to participate in the 100-met race and after that in the hurdle race. The combined competitions include capturing a trespasser. Every single dog must be vaccinated against hydrophobia.

Rainforests disappear daily. Endangered species are hunted for their pelts. Dolphins drown in tuna nets. Domestic and industrial waste pollutes the seas. The problem with the damage being done to the ozone layer is that it is more difficult to believe in. It has no veracity or immediacy for the majority of the public because they can’t see it. The man in the street does not feel that it is his problem.
The ozone layer is what protects all life on earth from the harmful effects of the sun's ultra violet rays. During the last fifty years or so it has been subjected to a barrage of man-made chemicals, chiefly chlorofluoro carbons or, as they are more familiarly known as CFCs. These gases and their agents are ubiquitous in our society.
Where would we be without factories, refrigerators-domestic and industrial, air-conditioning apparatus, solvents, and last, but definitely not least, aerosol sprays? How many homes are without their air fresheners, hair-sprays, furniture polish, deodorants, flysprays? All of there are part and parcel of domestic life....

Rabbits
Southern Europe is the place of origin of the rabbit. It is found in varying quantities in every continent on the globe; but the main producing sections are the central and southern parts of Europe and Australia. There is a very interesting species of the rabbit that was originally found in the Porto Santo-Madeira Islands, which lie off the northwestern coast of Africa, that is known as the "silk Rabbit".
Its home is in runways of burrows that it makes in the ground, usually among low-lying bushes. The food of the rabbit consists of soft parts of plants, such as leaves, buds, or roots; and when it can find them it will eat vegetables and garden plants in preference to other plants.
Something of the prolific nature of the rabbit can readily be seen from the fact that it breeds every five weeks from March to October, and each litter (помет) has from 5 to 12 young. These young are immature (незрелый) and naked when born; but in the warm climates they develop so rapidly that in 5 months they are fully matured. In the colder climates, however, the maturing process takes 12 months.
The elders are more careful of their young than the hares are, and the loss (потери) during infancy is not so great as in the latter species.
