ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

Пособие «Времена английского глагола» рассчитано на студентов младших курсов факультета иностранных языков; его также можно использовать в работе с учащимися лицеев, гимназий, классов с углубленным изучением английского языка. Его целью является помощь в отработке навыков использования времен английского глагола в активном и пассивном залогах. Элементарная лексика, используемая в упражнениях, позволяет учащимся сосредоточить основное внимание именно на грамматических явлениях.

Пособие состоит из трех разделов; первый и второй предназначены главным образом для аудиторной работы, вследствие чего в них практически отсутствуют упражнения на перевод. В эти разделы пособия включены упражнения с разнообразными методическими установками; многие из них носят коммуникативный характер.

Третья часть содержит упражнения, которые могут быть рекомендованы для самостоятельной работы после завершения выполнения упражнений предыдущих разделов. Это – упражнения на перевод с русского языка на английский, а также на выбор формы из нескольких предложенных вариантов. Каждое из них предназначено для закрепления учебного материала в комплексе; кроме того, в них включен материал по употреблению предлогов. Несколько заключительных упражнений предполагают перефраз предложений, а также составление связного рассказа из отдельных предложений, для чего также требуется знание грамматических времен.

При составлении пособия использованы материалы из трудов отечественных и зарубежных грамматистов последних лет.

Part I. TENSES IN THE ACTIVE VOICE

Exercise 1.

Read quickly in the singular.

1. My friends want to study French. 2. They remember everything. 3. Do these girls go to the theatre on Saturday? 4. His friends work in Moscow. 5. The children play all the morning and sleep in the afternoon. 6. They live in small houses which have three rooms. 7. They get new books from the library every week. 8. Their holidays finish in August. 9. The postmen bring letters three times a day. 10. They do not believe her stories. 11. My friends like meat and do not like fish. 12. The boys wake up at seven. 13. They teach Russian. 14. Housewives have to work very hard. 15. Every morning they brush their teeth and wash themselves.

Exercise 2.

Put disjunctive questions to the following statements.

1. It gets dark very early in winter. 2. It doesn’t take you long to get to the University. 3. Helen spends a lot of time in the library. 4. There are a lot of flowers in the vase. 5. You don’t remember the new words. 6. Benny and John are his nephews. 7. There isn’t any chalk at the blackboard. 8. Some of our students live in the hostel. 9. We can have a good time together. 10. My friends have a lot of relatives in Moscow.

Exercise 3.

Read the following sentences and correct them. Make up two correct sentences each time.

Model: The sun goes round the earth.

A) The sun doesn’t go round the earth.

В) The earth goes round the sun.

1. The sun rises in the west. 2. Children go to school at the age of 10. 3. The Volga flows into the Black Sea. 4. Mice catch cats. 5. Ice melts at 100 degrees Centigrade. 6. Sheep eat meat. 7. Exercise 4.

Choose an animal, bird or fish that you can associate plete the sentences in the 1st person. Let your group-mates guess who you are.

Exercise 5.

Read the superstitions.

1. If you walk under a ladder you will have bad luck.

2. If a girl catches the bride’s bouquet after a wedding she will be the next to marry.

3. If you break a mirror you will have seven years’ bad luck.

4. If you see a small spider you will get a lot of money.

5. If a black cat crosses your path you will have good luck.

6. If you touch wood your good luck will continue.

7. If you scratch your left hand you will give money away.

Think whether they are the same as in your native country.

Exercise 10.

Use if, when, before, after, while, till, until, as soon as, as long as, unless.

Join the sentences into one using till, until, if, unless, while, before, after.

1. We shall be at the theatre. She’ll look after our children.

4. They will go for a walk with us. I’ll be through with my work.

5. We’ll understand it. You’ll explain it.
