6.2. Course objectives

·  to give the audience an idea of the main stages and development directions of economic thought in the past and in the present

·  to contribute to their comprehending historical peculiarities concerning creation of categorical inventory and methodological criteria of basic political doctrines on economy

·  to investigate genesis and evolution of theoretical trends which produced a major impact on elaboration and conceptual formation of economic policy during the capitalist era

·  to analyse main disputable and methodological aspects of historico-economic domains of knowledge.

6.3. Course contents and structure

The present course is conducted to the postgraduates of the first year. It aims at making deeper the theoretical and methodological skills of the students in the sphere of economic sciences. Structure and contents of the course are determined to a large extent by the condition that it is conducted within the framework of studying a compulsory subject of “History and Philosophy of Science”. Therefore the main attention is paid to the aspects which reflect methodological peculiarities of this or that economic school, its influence on the way the economic sciences developed as well as interrelation of the abovementioned peculiarities with the general nature of scientific and philosophical thought development during the respective period.

Practical part of the course is characterized by the emphasis on developing skills of individual research work. Participation in discussions, preparation of talks, and reports on chosen topics made during the class are to help students take a stance with regard to estimating the role of the most prominent schools in the development of economic theory.

The major result work within the framework of the course is a special paper written by the student on the chosen subject matter. The topic of the paper is given by the supervisor of the postgraduate student taking into account scientific interests of the latter and supposed topic of his dissertation project.

The course can be conventionally divided into four parts: the first (Themes 1-2) are devoted to the aspects of genesis of political economy; the second (Topics 3-5) deals with genesis and development of the liberal tradition within classical and neoclassical theories as well as formation of schools alternative to this trend of economic thought; the third (Themes 6-7) tackles the problems of development of regulated capitalism conception; the fourth (Themes 8-9) considers various aspects of modern schools.

6.4. Teaching methods used

Individual work of students on course problems presupposes the writing of a historical essay on an economics subject as well as participation in discussions and talks during practical studies. A postgraduate determines a theme of the aforementioned essay together with his supervisor, and this theme ought to reflect postgraduate’s academic and spiritual interests. At the end of every part of the course study it is foreseen to conduct interactive classes which presuppose discussions about the covered material. The subject matter of the classes is made precise by the lecturer in accordance with the wishes of the audience, but it is possible to single out five main themes for discussion:

I. Economic thought before the advent of the Classical School

II. Classical School

III. Neoclassical Theory

IV. Keynesianism and its evolution

V. Liberal wave and its critics

Within discussion of every theme students aim at gaining a definite scope of knowledge, which is mastered with the help of key questions list on the respective sections of the course.

6.5. Grading

The main aim of the postgraduate within the framework of the course study is to present in a due time theme and plan coordination and acceptance as well as the final version of an essay which should be done according to the schedule. A necessary condition for getting a credit is participation in interactive discussions of the material under study and a positive evaluation by the teacher of the results of the interim and final tests. Students who have missed any classes get additional tasks on the misses themes during the test.

Forms of supervision: writing an essay, interim test, writing a test after finishing the course, and colloquy, questions and student reports with the use interactive forms of study.

Interim and final tests done in the written form and include theoretical (open) and test questions.
