Writing

Read these instructions:

An international magazine called The World’s Famous has invited readers to write about well-known people in their own country for possible publication. Write an article in 120-180 words about somebody famous – living or dead – from your country. Describe his person’s character and state how this shows in his or her appearance.

Think about these suggestions as you make a plan and write your article.

-  choose someone whose character and appearance you are familiar with

-  briefly say who this person is or was, and possibly also why you have chosen him or her

-  use relevant adjectives to give a general character impression

-  describe he subject in more detail, giving examples of his or her habits and behaviour

-  give a general impression of the person’s physical appearance

-  focus on aspects that reflect character: way of standing or walking, hand gestures, facial expressions. Also describe features such as eyes and mouth, using suitable adjectives

Структура проведения тура: участвуют два экзаменатора и два участника олимпиады. Пары составляются методом случайной подборки. Преподаватели начинают вести беседу и задают каждому участнику 2-3 вопроса для того, чтобы снять напряжение, расположить их к беседе и подготовить к выполнению устного задания.

Время, отводимое на данный этап задания, 1-2 минуты.

What activities and hobbies are you good at? Do you read a daily newspaper? What is your favourite section? Do you believe everything you read in the news? Why? Why not? Are some more believable than others? Which ones?

Your task is the following: in a minute you’ll have to speak about taking a survival course. Please, tell us what is to be done in the case of emergency?

Члены жюри задают вопросы:

How can dangers be overcome? How may the weather affect them? Which experience and knowledge should you have that could help? In what way can special fears (such as heights, water, cold or enclosed spaces) influence your survival?

Часть 2.

Участникам олимпиады предлагается обсудить в паре следующее:

You and your partner are on a survival course. At the moment you are on a mountain top. You have to get from the camp to the safety of the village as quickly as possible, and there are only two possible routes: over the top of the mountain, or underground through the caves. Now it has started to snow heavily. That means that soon it will be very difficult to cross the mountain while the caves lower down will start to fill up with water. For safety reasons it is important that you stay together, so you must agree on which route to take.
