АНГЛИЙСКАЯ ГРАММАТИКА В ПОСЛОВИЦАХ И ПОГОВОРКАХ

Аннотация. Представленные ниже материалы помогут учащимся в усвоении и закреплении некоторых разделов английской грамматики: времена английского глагола, условные предложения, инфинитив, герундий, артикли, степени сравнения прилагательных, множественное число существительных, причастие I и II, притяжательный падеж существительных, словообразование. Выполнение данных заданий позволяет учащимся расширить знание лексики английского языка, а также более глубоко познакомиться с русскими и английскими пословицами и поговорками.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN PROVERBS AND SAYINGS.

Abstract. The following materials will help students in assimilating and consolidating some of the sections of English grammar: tenses of English verbs, conditional sentences, infinitive, gerund, articles, degrees of comparison of adjectives, plural of nouns, participle I and II, the possessive case of nouns, word formation. The implementation of tasks allows students to expand the knowledge of vocabulary of English, and also to get more deeply acquainted with Russian and English proverbs and sayings.

I. Use the simple present in the active or passive voice to complete the sen­tences. Give the Russian equivalents to these proverbs.

A bad beginning (make) a bad ending. An ox (take) by the horns, and a man by the tongue. An ill wound (cure), not an ill name. He that (promise) too much (mean) nothing. A tree (know) by its fruit. Bad news (have) plete the sentences. Use the simple future of the words in parentheses, give the Russian equivalents to these proverbs. A drowning man (catch) at a straw. A small leak (sink) a great ship. Ask no questions and you (tell) no lies. (Passive Voice). Claw me, and I (claw) you. Death when it comes (have) no denial. Follow the river and you (get) to the sea. Put questions to the underlined words. Match the English proverbs with the Russian equivalents. Walls have ears. Truth lies at the bottom of a well. Care killed the cat. His money bums a hole in his pocket. The rotten apple injures its neighbors. A silent fool is considered wise. Ищи ветра в поле, а правду на дне морском. У него в кармане дыра. Молчи - за умного сойдешь. Лес видит, а поле слышит. Не работа старит, а забота. Паршивая овца все стадо портит. Conditional plete the proverbs with the verbs in parenthe­ses, give the Russian equivalents to these proverbs. If the sky (fall), we shall catch larks. If my aunt (be) a man, she would have been my uncle. If there (be) no clouds, we should not enjoy the sun. If you agree to carry the calf, they (make) you carry the cow. If you (laugh) before breakfast you will cry before supper. If you try to please all you (please) none. Use a gerund or an infinitive to complete each sentence. Match the English proverbs with the Russian equiv­alents. There is no use(cry) over spilt milk. Be slow (promise) and quick (per­form). Early to bed and early (rise) makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Appetite comes with (eat). Between two evils it’s not worth (choose). Fools grow without (water).

  7.  If you agree (carry) the calf, they will make you (carry) the cow.

  8.  Live not (eat), but eat (live).

Аппетит приходит во время еды. Много есть - не велика честь. Слезами горю не поможешь. Дураков не сеют, они сами родятся. Обещай мало - делай много. Дай воли на палец - и всю руку откусят. Хрен редьки не слаще. Кто рано ложится и рано встает, здоровье, богатство и ум наживет. Complete the proverbs using infini­tive with “to" or without ‘to".

Translate the proverbs and give Russian equivalents to them.

He cannot (speak) well that cannot (hold) his tongue. A blind man would be glad (see). Every ass loves (hear) himself bray. He begins (die) that quits his desires. Let every man (praise) the bridge he goes over. The leopard cannot (change) its spots.

VII. Use the simple past to complete the sentences. Translate the proverbs and give Russian equivalents to them.

Curiosity (kill) the cat. Faint heart never (win) fair lady. He jests at scars that never (feel) a wound. He that never (climb) never (fall). He who (please) everybody (die) before he (be) born.

IX. Use the present perfect of the verbs in parentheses. Match the English proverbs with Russian equivalents.

Bacchus (drown) more men than Neptune. He knows best what good is that (endure) evil. The mountain (bring) forth a mouse. When children stand quiet, they (do) some harm. He отведав горького, не узнаешь и сладкого. Из пустяков да много шума.
Если дети притихли, значит, они что-то натворили. Кто вино любит, тот сам себя губит.

X. Use adjectives from the list to com­plete the proverbs. Match the English proverbs with Russian equivalents.

like, good, black, drunk, innocent, sure, old, plain.

Complete the sentences. Use the comparative form of the words in paren­theses. Give Russian equivalents to the proverbs. 1. Actions speak (loud) than words.
