Telephone. Telephone systems.

Read and translate the text:

The telephone is a necessary means of communication in everyday life and in business.

If you want to call (=phone) your friend, you dial his phone number which can be found in the directory. If it is a long-distance call, you may have to ask the operator to connect you.

The telephone will ring, and if your friend is at home, he will answer it by picking up the receiver. If he is busy, he may ask you to call back later. If he doesn’t want to speak to you, he may hang up. If he is already on the phone when you call him, his number is engaged (=busy) and you can’t get through. A telephone in a public place is a phone box (booth) or pay phone. To place a local call, pick up the receiver. You will hear a constant tone. Deposit the coins into the slot. When you have deposited the correct amount of change, you will hear a short beeping signal. When the constant tone returns, dial the number you wish to reach.

In many countries the telephone system has a special number for each region of the country. It is called an area code. If you know the area code and the phone number, you can dial the number and you’ll be automatically connected with any person in any part of the country. You can dial directly to many countries overseas or you can ask for the operator especially if you want to make a collect call. If somebody wants to know your telephone number, you should call out (называть) each figure separately: 8163 – eight-one-six-three. For zero you read “oh” (though “zero” is acceptable, too). If the first or last two figures are the same, you use the word “double”: for example: 2235 – double two-three-five, 4444 – double four-double four. Numbers like 1000, 2000 are read simply “one thousand”, “two thousand”.

Holidays mean different things to different people. Some people like a quiet rest, while other people, especially young, enjoy active open-air holidays.

Many people all over the world spend their holidays traveling. It’s always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different music. They visit museums and art galleries, go sightseeing and have meals at exotic restaurants. Most travelers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them. They can travel in their own country as well as in other countries. They can choose and buy a package tour of a foreign country at a travel agency.

City-dwellers also like a quiet holiday at the seaside or in the mountains where they do nothing but walk, bathe and lie in the sun. But accommodation at the seaside has become very expensive, that’s why people who have got their own cars stay at caravan and camping sites. If you bring your own car to England, you’ll be able to hire a comfortable caravan. There are caravan camps all round the coast where you can get water and other things you need. A caravan holiday won’t be lonely. Every evening you’ll be in a camp with lots of other people. You’ll have to cook.

Another way of holiday-making is hiking. You pack your tent and start walking. You can go wherever you like and stay in the same place as long as you want. Walking holidays are very good for your health and quite cheap. Hitch-hiking is the favourite kind of holiday-making for teenagers.

There is something good in each way of holiday-making. Choose one according to your taste and money.

(Mr Blake and Mr Rodimov are talking)

B:

Good morning, Mr Rodimov. I’m very glad to see you. How are you?

R:

I’m fine, thank you. I haven’t seen you since last month. Have you been on holiday?

B:

Yes, my wife and I were on a two-week package tour of Spain. We rented (взяли напрокат) a car and saw a lot of beautiful places there.

R:

What was the weather like in Spain?

B:

It was dry (сухо) and hot all the time. Every morning we went to the beach. We swam a lot. It was very sunny and we got a very good suntan (загар). And what are your plans for the holiday, Mr Rodimov?

R:

You know, I usually go to the Crimea. The climate is healthy for the children there. This summer I’d like to go to Sochi. It’s a very good resort (курорт) on the coast of the Black Sea and is very popular with Russian holiday-makers. Our travel agencies offer different kinds of package tours. I am going to stay at a five-star hotel which is close (близко) to the beach.

B:

That’s a good idea.
