[1] Киты или китообразные (Cetacea) - отряд водных млекопитающих, в который входят 2 подотряда: беззубые киты, или усатые (Mystacoceti) и зубатые киты (Odontoceti). К беззубым китам относятся 3 семейства: гладкие киты (Balaenidae), полосатики (Balaenopteridae) и серые киты (Eschrichtiidae); к зубатым - 4 семейства: кашалотовые (Physeteridae), клюворылые (Ziphiidae), дельфиновые (Delphinidae) и речные дельфины (Platanistidae). Распространены в Мировом океане от Арктики до Антарктики [1, с. 249].

[2] Международный совет по исследованию моря, основанный в 1902 г., является одной из старейших международных межправительственных научных организаций. Первоначальными членами Совета являлись Великобритания, Германия, Дания, Нидерланды, Норвегия, Россия, Финляндия и Швеция. На сегодняшний день членами Совета, штаб-квартира которого расположена в Копенгагене, являются 20 государств. Деятельность Совета направлена на океанографические исследования и исследования морских живых ресурсов северной Атлантики [55].

[3] Вступила в силу 16 января 1935 г. Сторонами Конвенции являлись: Албания, Бельгия, Великобритания, Германия, Греция, Дания, Исландия, Испания, Италия, Колумбия, Мексика, Нидерланды, Норвегия, Польша, Румыния, США, Турция, Финляндия, Чехословакия, Франция, Швейцария и Югославия.

[4] За сезон 1936 - 1937 гг. эти государства добыли в сумме 7 тыс. 428 китов [61].

[13] Используемые сейчас взрывные гарпуны снабжены гранатой, которая взрывается при попадании в кита, чтобы обеспечить, как считается, мгновенную и безболезненную смерть.

[15] Поведение данных государств еще раз продемонстрировало бессилие МКК в вопросах обеспечения своих решений в силу наличия в Конвенции пункта о возможности оговорок и протестов в отношении ее положений.

[17] К первым относятся: Соглашение по сохранению китообразных в Чёрном и Средиземном морях, а также прилегающей области Атлантики 1996 г. и Соглашение по сохранению малых китообразных Балтийского моря, Северо-Восточной Атлантики, Ирландского и Северного морей 1991 г. Среди юридически необязательных документов можно отметить Меморандум о взаимопонимании в отношении сохранения ламантинов и малых китообразных Западной Африки и Макаронезии и Меморандум о взаимопонимании в отношении сохранения китообразных и ареалов их обитания в районе тихоокеанских островов.
