I. Introductory information about the course
Dear friends! As you know, in 2013 Kazan will host a prestigious tournament-the World Student Games or the Universiade. During the tournament many of you will work as volunteers of the Universiade. The word “volunteer” comes from the French word volontaire and means helping people on voluntary basis, socially useful work.
To be a success as a volunteer you must know English rather well. I believe this course also will encourage you to study English if you are going to travel or work abroad in future. Today you are going to learn how to greet foreigners and communicate with them, to ask for and give personal information, to write CV. But at first I’d like you to learn some information about the 27 World Student games - Summer Universiade - 2013
II. Listening
Listen to the text “What is the Universiade?” and say what these numbers belong to: 27, 1928, 2, 1995, 3, 1, 16, 1973, 37, 200, 400, 2013.
What is the Universiade? Universiade or World Students’ Games in terms of importance is viewed to be second only to the Olympics. First summer games were held in Paris in May 1923. First Winter Games were held in 1928. Nowadays summer and winter Universiades are held every 2 years. Russia hosted the Universiade only once, in 1973 in Moscow. What will Universiade give to Kazan? It’s a great honor for each city to host such a big sport event. It will help Kazan to get the focus of attention not only of the world sport community, but also media, trade and business, tourism and sport industry.
During the preparation period Kazan will develop a powerful sport infrastructure; it will make life of youth and students more healthy and vivid.
Who else made a bid for the Universiade 2013? We had 2 competitors — Vigo (Spain) and Gwangju (Korea).
FISU Evaluation committee visited Kazan, they examined the city, sport venues, hotels and restaurants. And each of them made an evaluation of the city.
Final results were announced in Brussels (Belgium) and the host city of the Universiade 2013 was defined.
Why Kazan and Russia have deserved to host Universiade 2013?
Firstly, more than 150 thousands students from Russia and all over the world study in 37 universities located in the city. Secondly, Russian delegations are most numerous in the Universiades. From 1995 Russian sportsmen won more than 400 medals in summer Universiades and about 200 in winter. Thirdly, young sportsmen from Kazan also get medals in the Universiades. For example, in Bangkok 16 sportsmen from Kazan won 3 gold, 2 bronze and 1 silver medals. Fourthly, Kazan has all necessary infrastructure and great experience for hosting such a big event on the best level. Finally, Kazan is a city with unique traditions and culture and is ready to meet young sportsmen from all over the world.
