What to eat in Kazan

The original Tatar national cuisine was developed in the course of centuries-long history. Long since Tatars were engaged in farming and animal breeding, and it

contributed to the domination of flour, meat and milk dishes in food.
Soups and broths (shulpa) had a primary importance for Tatars. The most popular

is tokmach (soup-noodles)

Meat, cereal dishes and potato appear in the traditional Tatar cuisine as seconds. Meat … in a broth, cut into small flat slices, sometimes slightly extinguished in oil with onion, carrot and pepper, is often served for seconds. If soup made on a chicken broth, hen also cut on slices is served for seconds. … potato is more often served for garnish; a horseradish is served in a separate cup. A hen, … with eggs, with milk (tutyrgan tavyk) is usually made on holidays.

Tatars always gave a great importance to a batch, skillfully baked pies from sour, barmy, fresh, simple and fancy dough. The most traditional and simple pie is kystyby, it is a combination of fresh dough with a couscous and potato mash. Balish, made from fresh dough with mincemeat from slices of rich meat (mutton, beef, goose meat, duck meat) with potato is considered to be the most favorite and not less traditional. It can be made both big and small size. Echpochmak (triangle), peremyach with mincemeat from hash meat with onions refer to the same category of food.
The most known Tatar sweet is chak-chak (honey nuts). It serves with racy tea "po-kazanski".
The Kazan cuisine which took in the culinary traditions of the Bulgars, Tatars, Russians, the influence of East and Europe, is rich in various dishes of daily and celebratory dinner.
Everywhere in the city you see people eating - in restaurants, tea salons, cafes and

wine bars. Most restaurants serve national Tatar and Russian food but there is a

range of Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Turkish  eateries in many areas as

well as Georgian, Armenian places.

Getting around:

Sightseeing:

Historically significant places:

Entertainment:

Food and drink:

If you come to Kazan by early morning train, you will be hospitably greeted at the central railroad station, which is situated in the centre of the city. At first you can see the panorama of the Kazanka river, and high on the hill you will see the white walls of the Kremlin with minarets of the mosque and cupolas of churches just behind it.
Millenary Kazan is interesting first of all for its architectural monuments. The historical centre of the city is a harmonious mixture of styles, with Russian and Tatar constructions peacefully erecting side by side. Districts of Kazan are arranged with modern parks and entertainment centers, sports complexes and huge trade pavillions.
The main sightseeing of Kazan is its outpost, the Kazan Kremlin constructed after a seizure of Kazan by Russian troops in 1553. Here is the largest mosque of Europe Kul-Sharif. From the walls of the Kremlin you can admire a picturesque view on the Volga river. There is a temple of “the Not-Made-By-Hands Icon of  Savior”, more known as the Monument for Russian soldiers, dead during the seizure of Kazan. It is located on an  island in the centre of the Kazanka river. From the walls of the Kremlin you can also see modern Kazan – the entertainment complex "Pyramid" constructed in hi-tech style.
In the very centre of the city there is a «Kazan Arbat» - Bauman Street, on which Bogoyavlensky cathedral is located. The great singer Fedor Shalyapin, the native of Kazan, was christened here. In this street you have an opportunity to examine the copy of Catherine II carriage and even get into it, as well as to have a snack in the restaurant of the Tatar Cuisine and taste real Tatar dishes – belyashi (round fried meat pies) and koumiss.
Six bridges over the Bulak canal, each of which has the history and name, lead to Bauman Street.
