SUBWAY: PROSPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT

Besides, Czechoslovak operational workers did their practical work in Moscow. Soviet engineers are now working in Culcutta where the first in the country underground line is under construction. Soviet assistance ranges from designing the project to training personnel and a supply of Soviet technology. Later on that experience will be used to make subway lines in more Indian cities.

THE TOWN OF TOGLIATTI'

Soviet architects and builders today are working on the problem of architecture lay-out2 and composition of residential areas in the system of major town-building complexes. The designing and building of new cities go hand in hand with the progressive solution of the planning and architecture of the city and its residential districts; the transport network is included in the design too. Much attention is paid to the convenience of the population while locating everyday services and shopping centres. Togliatti, the new centre of the car industry, can serve as an example. The first stage of construction in Togliatti was started in 1968 and completed in 1971. The completed area has a population of more than 150,000. The residential area is about 2-4 kilometres from the car plant. It lies along one of the principal thoroughfares, that ensures' communications with the plant, the railway and bus stations, a water reservoir and the resort area. The first stage has been done as a complete structural portion of the town with a developed public centre, a network of cultural and communal services and a system of roads. Groups of blocks of flats5 for two-four thousand inhabitants. are an important compositional element. Each group is sited around a courtyard with sport facilities trees, flowerbeds, etc. The houses are of 5, 9, 12 or 16 storeys. This underlines the expressiveness of architecture.
