1. Anton Semenovich Makarenko, an outstanding Russian Soviet educator and writer, was born to a worker's family in Belopolye, a small town in the Kharkov region.
2. His parents wanted very much to see their son well-educated.
3. First he studied at a village school, then finished the program of the six-year school.
4. In 1917 Makarenko graduated from the Poltava Teachers Training Institute.
5. Then he went to work.
6. During the Civil War many children lost their parents.
7. The colonies were organized for them.
8. Anton Makarenko was the head of such a colony.
9. In the Gorky Colony and later in the Dzerzhinsky Commune, Makarenko formulated the main principles of his method.
10. He set himself the task of bringing up a harmoniously developed individual.
11. He trusted in the reforming force of the collective.
12. Being a gifted writer Makarenko wrote several novels, short stories and plays.
