I. Read the text:
1. The academician Victor Vladimirovich Vinogradov was one of the greatest philologists of our time.
2. His name and works belong not only to home linguistics, but to the world linguistics as well.
3. It was he, who continued to develop the best traditions of Russian philology.
4. It was he, who paved the new ways of science of language.
5. Vinogradov wrote a lot of works in grammar, lexicology, history of linguistics.

I. Read the text:
1. Peter Frantsevich Lesgaft was born in the jeweler's family in Saint - Petersburg in 1837.
2. Having finished lyceum with a silver medal in 1856 he entered the Medico - Surgical Academy.
3. In 1865 Lesgaft defended his thesis and became a doctor of medicine.
4. Three years later the defense of the second thesis took place and he got the status of the doctor of surgery.
5. In autumn, 1868 Lesgaft was elected the professor of Kazan University and became the head of the Chair of Physiological Anatomy.
6. That time the atmosphere at the University was gloomy.
7. In Kazan P. F. Lesgaft worked till 1872 and all that time long he struggled against conservative professors.
8. Since 1872 he started his work in the field of physical education.
9. In 1874 he became a consultant of physical education at the Ministry of Defence.
10. He studied physical education in many countries, visiting Germany, France, Austria, Italy, England, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland.
11. Everywhere P. F. Lesgaft saw just a technical side in teaching gymnastics, which lacked pedagogical elements.
12. He gave the estimate of what he saw in various reports made for Russian public.
13. As a result of his scientific research the works "To the Study of School Age", "Physical Development at School", "Guidance to Physical Development of School Aged Children" were published.
14. From 1896 to 1897 he delivered lectures at the faculty of Nature at Saint - Petersburg University.
15. In 1896 P. F. Lesgaft organized courses for educators and instructors of physical training (that was private higher education).
16. The best and the most progressive professors of that time worked there.
17. Those courses were prohibited by the government many times, but they functioned successfully up to his death.
18. P. F. Lesgaft died on the 11th of December in 1909, Egypt, where he was treated.
19. But he was buried in St. - Petersburg.
20. His works in the field of pedagogics and physical education are widely used nowadays.
