Kinds of circuits

Circuits can be divided into four classes: series, parallel, combination of series – parallel and network.

Series circuits are those having only one closed path for the flow of electricity. All the elements or devices which make up the circuit are connected in tandem, one after the other, so that the end of one is connected to the beginning of the other; or, in other words, the positive terminal is connected to the negative terminal of another. If the series circuit is open anywhere, the current will not flow through the circuit.

A parallel circuit is one divided into two or more branches, each branch carrying part of the current. Another way of saying the same thing is that all elements or devices are connected so that one half of terminals are fastened to a common point or a common conductor, and the other half are fastened to another common point, or another conductor.

The nature of electricity

The ancient Greeks knew that when a piece of amber is rubbed with wool or fur it achieves the power of attracting light objects. Later on the phenomenon was studied, and the word electric after the Greek word “electron”, meaning amber was used. Many scientists investigated electric phenomena, and during the 19-th century many discoveries about the nature of electricity and of magnetism, which is closely related to electricity, were made. It was found that if a sealing – wax rod is rubbed with a woolen cloth, and a rod of glass is rubbed with a silken cloth, an electric spark will pass between the sealing – wax rod and the glass rod when they are brought near one another. Moreover, it was found that a force of attraction operates between them. An electrified sealing – wax is repelled, however, by a wax rod, and also an electrified glass rod is repelled, by a similar glass rod.

The ideas were developed that there are two kinds of electricity, which were called resinous electricity and that opposite kinds of electricity attract one another, whereas similar kinds repel one another.

Краткий грамматический справочник

Работа со словарем

Для быстрой ориентации при работе со словарем нужно прежде всего хорошо знать алфавит. Следует помнить, что порядок размещения слов на одну букву также организован по принципу алфавита внутри слова до последней буквы. Необходимо разбираться в условных обозначениях, знать исходную форму слова, обращать внимание на страницу словаря, где вверху даются первые три буквы слов, начинающих страницу (слева), и три первые буквы слов, заканчивающих страницу (справа).

Словарь располагает и справочным материалом. Сюда входят наиболее употребительные сокращения, географические названия и др.

Производные формы слова имеют специальный знак ~ (тильда), который заменяет основное слово. Иногда повторяющееся слово отделяется от изменяемой его части двумя вертикальными параллельными черточками ll.

Ряд словарей используют алфавитно-гнездовую систему слов. При таком расположении термины, которые состоят из определения и определяемого слова, нужно искать по определяемым словам. Например, steam engine следует искать в гнезде термина engine.

Ведущий термин в гнезде заменяется знаком ~ (тильдой). Например:

рour 1) лить(ся), вливать(ся); 2) наливать(ся); ~ out а) наливать, разливать (чай и т. д.); б) выливаться, литься; It never rains but it ~s. посл. Беда не приходит одна.

Не следует забывать, что в словаре слово всегда дается в исходной форме; существительное – в единственном числе, прилагательное – в положительной степени, глагол – в трех формах: инфинитив, Past Indefinite, Past Participle. При совпадении второй и третьей форм в словаре дается только одна из них.

Многозначность слов

Определенную трудность для перевода с английского языка на русский представляют многозначные английские слова. Например, effect может быть существительным в значении действие, результат, эффект; а в качестве глагола обозначает совершать, выполнять. Поэтому при переводе важно подобрать нужное по смыслу значение, руководствуясь контекстом, т. е. обращая внимание на слова, окружающие данное слово.
