Britain’s forests

1.  In prehistoric times Britain was well covered with trees. But as the population changed and grew, as the agriculture developed and the need for timber increased, the forest areas gradually disappeared. However, some woodland areas enjoyed a royal protection.

2.  Of the remaining natural forests in Great Britain the New Forest is one of the largest and finest. The oak and the beech are the most outstanding natural trees of the New Forest. Other trees are the yews and the hollies. Of the coniferous trees now grown in the forest, the Scots pine (Pinus silvestris) is a native of the British Isles. Other forests are now springing up in many parts of the country.

3.  The Forestry Commission has now planted 1,5 million acres of trees in the 500 forests of the country. Of these, 90 % are conifer trees because they are quick growing. The softwood they provide represents practically 90 % of timber needs of Britain.

Forests of Europe

1.  In Europe not counting Russia today timber exporters are: Norway, Finland and Sweden. In Norway forests cover one quarter of the total surface of the country. The principal tree species in Norway are spruce, pine and birch. We may also find oak, beech, ash, alder, maple, lime and yew.

2.  In Finland pine is the dominant tree species. Birch grows extensively, but from the production point of view it is of less value because at present only special grades of paper are made from it. It is used as raw material for plywood and veneer industry and as fuel wood. Today about 70 % of the whole area of Finland is covered with forests. The greatest part of the forest is privately owned, mainly by farmers.

3.  In Sweden the tree species are very much the same as in Finland and Norway. These countries make the most important wood producing part on the European continent, with advanced lumber and pulp industries.

Forests of Canada

The most important trees in Canada are the spruces. About one third of Canada’s timber is spruce. Its wood is used for pulpwood, lumber and plywood.

Another tree is two-needled pine. These pines furnish 11 % of Canada’s standing timber.

Third in importance are the true firs. The most distributed is the balsam fir. Next is a family of broad-leaved deciduous trees – aspen and poplar.
