Cambridge

Cambridge is world-famous principally as a university city. Its history began more than eight hundred years ago with the development of the university and colleges. Peterhouse, founded in 1184, was the first college, and now there are more than twenty. Many of them are grouped together, and with their buildings and libraries create a picture of Cambridge as one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in Great Britain. One of the great architectural Britain’s glories is King’s College Chapel built between 1446 and 1515.

Other Cambridge buildings which must be mentioned include the Round Church which is a museum of original manuscripts and archaeological discoveries.

Cambridge cannot compete with other towns of the same size in the field of industrial development, but there are many important industries in the town.

Cambridge is easily reached by train from London.

The Libraries of London

Let us start with the highest library in London, the Capitular Library of St. Paul’s Cathedral. To reach it, you must be prepared for a long climb, for it is situated right up the Whispering Gallery which encircles the base of the Cathedral dome. The origin of the Library goes back to the seventh century, but all its books were destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The archives, however, were preserved. The Library was re-founded after the Fire and the library’s collection was built up again.

From the highest library in London let us go to the biggest which, of course, is that of the British Museum. The British Museum Library contains about six million books and the large circular Reading Room is in the center of the Museum Building.

A passage from the Reading Room leads to the North Library, which is reserved for the study of early and rare books.

In 1841 the London Library was founded – a library of about 600,000 books, mainly devoted to the humanities and fine arts.

Sports and games in Great Britain

All young people in Britain who are still at school have to take part in some kind of sports. Boys play football, rugby or cricket; girls play hockey, netball or tennis. Naturally, there are always some people who detest sports and games and they try to give excuses to the sports master every week to avoid sports lessons. But there are also many teenagers enjoying sports who continue to go in for sports after they leave school. Some of them continue to play tennis, for example, simply because they enjoy it and like to meet people at the tennis club during the weekend. There are others who play tennis because they want to become famous and play on the center Wimbledon’s court – one of the most important courts in the world. The Junior Lawn Tennis Championships are held there every autumn.

A sport which is very popular among young people who enjoy the water is underwater swimming using an aqualung. Young people can swim at the National Recreation Center at London’s Crystal Palace and at other places.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London is called “The Cradle of the English race”. It is the oldest palace, fortress and prison in Europe. The greatest fortress was created by William the Conqueror, nearly 900 years ago. The site was well chosen, the fortress commanded the river approaches to the city and it protected the king and government from London’s citizen.

The Tower of London is roughly square in shape with two lines of defensive walls enclosing the tower which for centuries has been known as the White Tower. The outer wall is defenced by six towers on the river face and by two semi-circular bastions at the north-east and north-west.

Over the centuries the Tower has served many purposes. It has been a citadel, a royal palace, a prison.

There have always been ravens at the Tower and some are still there.

Every night at 7 minutes to 10 o’clock the oldest and most colourful ceremony takes place for the last 700 years in the same form as it is seen today.

Engines

Petrol engines are also less noisy than diesel engines. They usually go faster. On the other hand, diesel engines use less fuel and last longer than petrol engines, and this is why larger vehicles such as trucks and trains use them. They are also safer than petrol engines, because there is less danger of fire.

There are two main types of petrol engines – 4-stroke and 2-stroke. All cars and larger motor-cycles use 4-stroke engines. But most smaller motorbikes use 2-stroke engines. They are lighter and smaller than 4-stroke engines, and are therefore cheaper.
