Множественное число составных/сложных существительных

1 Если составное существительное пишется слитно, то прибавлением –s (-es) к последнему слову: schoolboy школьник – schoolboys школьники, breakdown поломка – breakdownsполомки.

Или так, если второе слово образует множественное число по индивидуальным правилам, например: postman почтальон – postmen почтальоны.

2 Если пишется через черточку (дефис), то форму множественного числа обычно принимает слово, несущее основной смысл: sister-in-law невестка - sisters-in-law невестки, passer-byпрохожий - passers-by прохожие.

Особые случаи образования множественного числа существительных

1 Сохранилась группа существительных, образующих множественное число посредством изменения гласной корня и принимающих окончание –en:
